FRANCA MARIA CARMELA KIZ (nee FIORENTINO) January 17, 1966 !December 15, 2011 of Winnipeg On December 15 at 5:19 a.m., Franca lost her battle with cancer and passed peacefully in the presence of family. Franca was born at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg to Francesco and Josephine Fiorentino. Her early years were spent in Transcona where she graduated from Transcona Collegiate Institute in 1983, went on to obtain a degree at the University of Manitoba in 1987 and eventually RN certification through the St. Boniface Hospital nursing program in 1989. She enjoyed a rich and varied nursing career, working obstetrical, medical and surgical departments and later outpatient and finally research-based nursing work. In 1995 Franca married and life took her to Minnesota, Ontario and eventually back home to Winnipeg. In Ontario Franca had three wonderful children who quickly became, and remained, the centre of her life. She enjoyed travel, summers at the lake and cherished time spent with friends and family. Franca wanted to thank Dr. Marshall Pitz and Nurse Linda and all the staff and volunteers at CancerCare Manitoba for their assistance during her long struggle. Thank you also to the doctors and staff at Riverview Health Centre for providing Franca with care, compassion, and most of all, dignity in her final days. Special thanks to all the friends and family who visited Franca, called, emailed and kept her in their thoughts. Your friendship provided Franca with much comfort, reassurance, and a few laughs, in her final days. Franca is survived by her parents Francesco and Josephine, her siblings Anthony and Elisa, her husband Robert and children Adriana, Evan and Austin, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and a niece. A Holy Mass will be held for Franca on Monday, December 19 at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. at 10:30 a.m., Father Sam Argenziano officiating. A gathering for family and friends will be held in the church hall after the mass, with entombment to follow at Green Acres Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Amanda Asmundson, Dylan Fiorentino, Frankie Fiorentino, Mary Ferlaino, Silvana MacKinnon, and Josie Cirelli. On her final birthday Franca was brought to tears when her children provided her with a card describing their gift of donations they raised for the Canadian Cancer Society on her behalf from school, neighbours and their sports teams. She said she had never been more proud. In light of this, and as per Franca's final wishes, in lieu of flowers please consider making a small donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or CancerCare Manitoba on her behalf.
