H. EDNA JAMES (nee THOMAS) Edna James passed away quietly on the 28th of December, 2011 while in the kind care of the staff and in the comfort of her own room at the River East Personal Care Home. Born in her grandmother's home in Hythe England 24 August 1918 while her Canadian soldier father was in France, she and her mother travelled to Canada in a ship loaded with the wives and children of Canadian soldiers at the end of the Second World War. Raised in Manitoba she saw England only in her retirement when she went to visit the cousins, aunts, and uncles to whom she had written all her life. Edna was one of the career women who staffed the service centres of the Canadian government. She was active in her retirement, square dancing and cross-country skiing into her mid 80s. Edna was predeceased by her husband Clifford James, her parents Hilda [Godden] Thomas and Harold Thomas, her brother Peter Thomas, and her husband's siblings and their spouses with whom she had warm relationships. She is survived by her nephew David Thomas and her nieces Margret Thomas and Shelley St. Godard. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family interment later in the year. We are very grateful to the staff at the nursing home for giving her a home filled with their kindness and affection in her last years.

  • Deepest sympathies to the family. Edna told me stories of her growing up here in Winnipeg, I found them to be interesting because it is history through someone else's eyes and history I never got to see. - Posted by: Audra Rosentreter (Homecare Attendant) on: Jan 01, 2012
