WALTER GUBERNACHUK
Date of Passing: Feb 11, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER GUBERNACHUK In sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Walter Gubernachuk, aged 95, on February 11, 2012 at Tuxedo Villa with family by his side. Walter was predeceased by wives, Stella, Katherine and Lasha. He leaves to mourn his only son, Eugene; his grandsons, Paul and Danny (April); Eugene's wife Jan Currie and her son Mitch; numerous step-relations and his special friend, Maria. Walter was born in Ukraine. Before the Second World War, he joined the Polish Army and was captured by the Russians when Germany and Russia attacked Poland. He and his fellow soldiers were sent to a concentration camp in Siberia, where he endured intolerable hardship over the following two years. The soldiers who survived were later freed and fought with the Allies, distinguishing themselves in battles such as Monte Cassino. When the war ended, Walter was housed in a refugee camp in Germany until he came to Winnipeg in 1948 with his wife and son, where he lived the rest of his life. Walter worked as a Master bricklayer and mason until retiring at age 65. When work was scarce in Winnipeg, he travelled throughout Canada to work, always returning and supporting his family. He will be remembered as a hard-working, active and generous man, who loved nature and spent many happy hours in the woods picking blueberries and mushrooms with family and friends. He will be sadly missed, but will always be with us in spirit. Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 17 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. with a Redemptorist Father officiating. Thank you to the staff at Victoria Hospital and Tuxedo Villa for their care and kindness in the last few months. KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193
