NINA (HARIKLIA) SAGRIOTIS June 20, 1963 - February 25, 2012 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Nina Sagriotis at the age of 48. After a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), Nina passed away peacefully on February 25, 2012, with family at her side. Remaining to forever cherish Nina's memory are her devoted husband and best friend of 25 years, Steven; children, Joseph and Priscilla; parents, Christos and Eleni; siblings, Dimitrius, George, Angie, Rita, Sonny, Nick and Steven; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews and loving in-laws. Nina was born on Mons, Belgium, and moved to Thompson, MB, at a young age where she grew up with the rest of the Sagriotis family. As a young girl, Nina was noticeably beautiful, with sky blue eyes, fire red lips and lovely ivory skin. She was truly unique in that her delicate beauty was often contrasted by her physical strength as her lacrosse days in Thompson demonstrated. Nina graduated from R.D. Parker Collegiate and went on to receive her hair stylist license. Nina had great passion for her work and updated her skills to meet the latest styles and fashion trends. She took great pride in being a hairstylist with edge and sassiness. She was very proud of her heritage and Greek culture and that was often displayed in the jewelry and crafts she made. Her amazing ability and attention to detail showed through her unique garments, fashion bags, and distinctive beaded jewelry. Although Nina enjoyed her work, nothing made Nina happier than the birth of her two children, Joseph and Priscilla. Along with her husband of 25 years, Nina spent her best years raising her young family in Thompson. Beyond anything else Nina lived for her two children and would stop at nothing to ensure their well-being. Two years after moving to Winnipeg, Nina received her diagnosis. Since that time and throughout this painful journey, her husband Steven has been an unwavering angel by Nina's side. Joseph and Priscilla provided her with the very best gift of all: the kind of love, affection and bond reserved for a mother and her children. Nina was very close to her five brothers and two sisters who were able to provide her with comfort, sometimes laughter and always love. If you were lucky enough to get to know Nina and to peel off the exterior, you would find a truly unique human being with a heart of gold. Whether it was helping the homeless, or receiving a Rescue Commendation for saving a drowning girl, Nina never hesitated when it came to helping those most vulnerable. Nina was a strong woman, both physically and mentally with a unique and independent spirit. Her soul lives on through those she loved, those she touched, and those she made laugh. She was and will remain our butterfly, strong, yet delicate and distinctively beautiful. Nina is our angel, forever providing love and strength from above to her two children, husband, and to all of us who love her so much. Our family would like to express our deepest appreciation to Rev. Fr. Theodore Paraskevopoulos for his guidance and support during this most difficult time. We would also like to recognize the efforts of the palliative care team with special thanks to Monique who made a strong connection with Nina. Prayers will be held at St. Demetrios Church (2255 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3P 0S2) on Monday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. and funeral Services on Tuesday, February 28 at 11:00 a.m at the same location. Interment will follow at Waverley Memorial Gardens. You may forward condolences through the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the ALS Society of Manitoba.

  • We would like to take this opportunity to express our sorrows for the passing of Nina. We met the Sagrioti family while in Thompson as Greek expatriates ourselves. We moved to Greece leaving Canada behind but never the memories of all the good people we met along the way. Our family was very much saddened when we heard the news regarding Nina. She was pretty, vibrant and had an edge to her that none could compete with. It did not comes as any surprise that she did well in her life. Although life was not generous with her regarding years we hope in our hearts that while on her journey on earth she lived long enough never to be forgotten. Let her spirit live strong let her family stand tall. Christos and Jenny Giannou & Family, Athens Greece - Posted by: Giannou & Family (family friends in Thompson ) on: Apr 20, 2012
