Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH EWERT Elizabeth Ewert passed away in Donwood Manor on March 1, 2012 at the age of 98. She was born to Gerhard and Maria (Dick) Ewert on December 13, 1913 near Omsk in Siberia, the eighth of eleven children. Following the Russian Revolution she moved with her family to Mexico in 1924 and then in 1927 to a farm near Carroll, MB. In 1931 her mother died and the next year her father married Anna Kerber Ewert, with whom Elizabeth lived for the next 50 years. After her father's death in 1943, Elizabeth and her mother moved to Winnipeg. Elizabeth was hard-working, adventuresome, cheerful, and wonderfully hospitable. At Concordia Hospital she worked as a nurse for 28 years. She travelled around the world with her brother Henry. She befriended her neighbors and hosted many a family gathering. Relatives and friends knew they could stay for night or for months. Elizabeth retired in 1975 to care for her mother until her death in 1983. During Elizabeth's retirement years she served as deacon in the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren church. She enjoyed bus tours, pizza with her friends, having friends and family over, and games of scrabble with her siblings. We will miss her ever cheerful hospitality. Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents and all 10 siblings. She leaves to mourn her sister-in-law Hilda Ewert and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and friends. Following the viewing and interment at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, a memorial service celebrating Elizabeth's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St. Donations may be made to MB Mission, 83 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg R2L 1L2, and Yonge St. Mission, 306 Gerrard St. E., Toronto M5A 2G7.

Betty was so many things to me! I grew up with her living next door to us. She was a wonderful neighbor. To this day I still miss her homemade buns with butter and jelly, Easter bread and shortbread cookies. Betty helped raise me and we spent so much quality time together playing marbles, visiting and reading the bible. I will miss her greatly. - Posted by: Christy Larence Hagel (Old neighbour) on: Feb 22, 2016

We knew Betty as a faithful volunteer at CEF. She worked in the Mailbox Club area correcting lessons that had been sent in by children throughout Manitoba. We visited her about 5 years ago. She had recently hurt herself because she had decided to flip her mattress on her bed. We were quite amazed at her spunk and energy. I was in a housing transition in the months before I got married, and Aunt Betty opened her home to me. She let me live there until the wedding and made me feel completely at home. She was very excited about the wedding plans and would always ask how things were going. She was a warm and hospitable woman with a great laugh. I think of her everytime I use her recipe for fruit crumble. Aunt Betty was a strong, independent woman who embraced life and didn't let much slow her down. Her adventurous spirit was an inspiration and role model for me, and I'm sure many others. She will be missed. - Posted by: Karen Pauls (relative) on: Mar 09, 2012

I remember staying at Aunt Anna's and Elizabeth's home for summer vacation bible school. Later on while in nurses training I would go over for a day or two and we would play scrabble. Hence my love for the game. She also introduced me to World Adventure tours at the concert hall. I think it was the fact that Betty was a nurse, that this intrigued me and eventually became a nurse myself. She was always laughing and cheerful even after working a night shift. She would take some of us to Lower Fort Garry for an outing. She always had time for others. She was also a great cook. - Posted by: Linda Zimmerman (3rd cousin) on: Mar 07, 2012
