DOUGLAS ARTHUR MCCARTNEY July 4, 1933 March 9, 2012 Born: St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg. Died: He passed peacefully, in his sleep, at the Riverview Care Facility, Winnipeg; surrendering to cancer after a long illness. Lived in Winnipeg all his life except for three years that were spent in the beautiful town of Souris. It was in Souris that he met the admirable Fraser family. He married Joan Fraser July 3, 1954 and they enjoyed many wonderful years together before she passed from cancer in 2003. Employed: Doug was employed with the Communications Department and the Investigation Department of the Canadian Pacific Railroad. He spent his last 32 years working for the Communications and Signals department of the City of Winnipeg. Thanks George! Retirement: He retired at 54 and thoroughly enjoyed those years afterward spending time with old friends and making new ones. He loved travelling to warmer climates in the winter months and had much fun playing games at the Rossmere, Heather, and Elmwood curling clubs, as well as the Kildonan Tennis Club. His greatest sporting accomplishment was winning the Canadian Senior Men's Curling Championship in 1987. Family and friends: His sons, Gary and Daryl (married to Anne), made up a great part of his life. Daryl, no matter how far away, would always return to provide guidance, as well as to offer assistance when it was needed. Gary was also there when needed, particularly with work around the house and garden. His grand-daughters Crystal, Ashlin, and Brittany provided much joy as they developed and progressed towards their life goals. Doug wished to express his love to the newest addition to our family Nancy Kolotylo his partner for the past eight years. He deeply valued the fun, love, and care she provided. Nancy's daughters Krista, Kathryn, and Karen and their families also brought a good deal of joy and excitement to his life. Doug and his family would like to thank his many friends for providing company and visits during the past several months - particularly Ron, Sam, Joyce, Max, Carl, Pastor Lurvey, and the extended Fraser family. Doug also wanted to say three big woofs to Blackie, Pepper, and Kia Ora - three generations of family pooches. Medical care: Dr. Czaykowski and nurse Denise with CancerCare and nurse Anne with the Palliative Care program provided exceptional care and compassion. The family also extends thanks to the staff at the Riverview Health Centre. A memorial service will be held at Sherwood Park Lutheran Church, 7 Tudor Crescent, Winnipeg on Saturday, March 17 at 3:00 p.m. A reception for all family and friends will be held in the church basement immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, donations in his memory may be made to a charity of their choice.
