ELIZABETH (ELSIE) JEAN HANNAFORD September 29, 1925 - March 11, 2012 On Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 1:10 p.m., Elsie peacefully passed away at the Victoria Hospital following complications from pneumonia. She was predeceased by her mother and father; her husband, Clarence, and her two brothers, Lou and Bohdan. She is survived by her three sisters, Mary, Sophie and Margaret; her three brothers, Adam, Alex and Harry; her children: stepson Dave Hannaford (Marie), daughter Roberta Bandfield (Chris), and son Rodney Hannaford (Allyson) as well as six grandchildren, Nicole Bross (Darcy), David Hannaford, Dan Hannaford, Jackie Shaddock (Scott), Tim Bandfield (Rebecca) and Elisha Bandfield, and two great-grandchildren, Mairead and Finley Bross. Elsie was born and raised in Strathclair, MB. She was one of nine children and lived a happy childhood under the care and protection of her hard-working parents. After high school, Elsie enrolled at United College and began a career teaching on Permit in Glenella, MB. She then returned to Winnipeg for a year of Normal School and got her second teaching position in Flin Flon, MB. There she met her husband, Clarence Hanny. Elsie spent many years in Flin Flon raising a family and enjoying their summer cottage on Lake Athapapuskow. There was no shortage of visitors. In 1974, Elsie ventured back to school to get her Bachelor's degree from Brandon University, her B.Ed. degree in 1981 and her Pre-M.Ed. in 1984 from the University of Manitoba. She then taught in Dawson Creek, BC, and Garden Grove Elementary School in Winnipeg until retiring in 1988. Following retirement, Elsie began travelling with the Friendship Force and learned about many different cultures on her trips to China, New Orleans, England, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan. Elsie was also very politically engaged and was an active NDP member for many years. She loved singing, golfing, playing bridge and cribbage, cooking, reading, shopping and attending auctions. Some of her best memories were celebrating special occasions with her brothers and sisters, meeting for the monthly Flin Flon luncheons, and hosting annual Ukrainian Christmas parties at her beautiful Castle on the Seine condo. She was so thankful for the many friends and family members who surrounded her and was most proud of her grandchildren and their accomplishments. The family would like to extend their gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the wonderful workers at Seine River Retirement Residence and the day in and day out care from the Comfort Keeper staff. When taking care of Elsie, you were invaluable with your foresight and patience. As well, the family wishes to thank the doctors and nursing staff at the Victoria Hospital for the care they gave Elsie during her stay. Elsie requested that her body be donated to the University of Manitoba's Department of Anatomy for medical research. There will be a Memorial Service held in her honour at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 17 at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery (#1 Highway E. and Navin Road.). In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Anatomical Research Fund c/o the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science at the University of Manitoba, 789-3411.
