HARRY ZUK Unexpectedly, on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, Harry Zuk passed away at the age of 89. Mourning his loss are his beloved wife of 60 years, Maria; daughter Orysia; son Andrew; granddaughter, Tasia; and relatives in Ukraine. Harry was predeceased by his twin brother, Ivan, in Ukraine. Harry was born in the village Mylyatin Staryj, Lvivska oblast, Ukraine on January 27, 1923. He immigrated to Canada after the Second World War and was reunited with his father, Andrij, in Winnipeg. He met Maria in Winnipeg and they married in 1952. He maintained his Ukrainian culture and instilled it in his children. Harry was a veteran of the First Ukrainian Division of the Ukrainian National Army. Harry worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad for 35 years to provide a good life for his family in Winnipeg and to help his relatives in Ukraine. He retired in 1983. After retiring, Harry enjoyed having coffee and socializing with his friends in the Garden City courtyard where he would buy lottery tickets in the hope that one day he would win the big jackpot. The big jackpot eluded him but he was very generous without it, especially at Christmas and birthdays. In the summer, Dad could be seen digging out weeds and maintaining his lawn and garden. He was always ready to help, be it with our yard work or taking care of his young granddaughter or the family pets. He was always secretly feeding the various family dogs scraps from his plate. He enjoyed watching the birds bathe in the backyard birdbath and was constantly refilling it with fresh water. Dad also enjoyed spending time with Andrew and was very proud that he was a police officer. He loved Tasia very much and he was happier whenever she was with him. He will be sadly missed. Sincere thanks to Dad's home care staff and everyone involved in the Palliative Care Program with special thanks to his case coordinator, Alison. The family would also like to thank the Riverview Health Centre staff for their compassion, support and kindness. Divine Liturgy will be sung 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat M. Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
