PETER WILBY April 11, 1922 - March 17, 2012 Pete will be lovingly remembered by his friends and family - sons, Peter, Bruce and Michael, and his stepdaughter, Lorraine. He was predeceased by his wife, Dot in 1999. Pete was born in Lancaster, England and came to Canada in 1939 with his mother. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. when he turned 18 and from April 1940 to September 1945 he flew 47 missions in two continuous tours. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar and was highly regarded by his crews for his flying skill and daring. Following his discharge in September 1945 he moved to Winnipeg with Dot to attend the University of Manitoba where he received his B.A degree and then his B. of Education degree. He taught at several schools in Winnipeg followed by a position with the Special Education Department. Until poor health slowed him down he enjoyed golf, gambling and working in his former riverside garden. Respecting Pete's wishes there will be no funeral or service.   • I met Peter and his surviving crew in 2001 at East Kirkby airfield, Pete was a gentleman and a very brave man spawned from a generation we will never see the likes of again.   • I'm so sad to hear the Mr Wilby passed away. I worked with Peter in the 1970s and early 80s at the Department of Education and remember him fondly.   • Peter was a friend of my Parents - Edward (Ted) & Lucy Speake. My Dad worked at the Kinsman School on Notre Dane Avenue. My late Sister (Sandra) & I enjoyed the fundraising Strawberry teas the Wilbys had in their riverside back garden every summer. I was a flight attendant with TCA durung that time and on my days off would volunteer with the activities with the school. Happy Memories.   • PETER WAS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BUDDIES WHEN WE BOTH WORKED IN THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. IN SOME WAYS HE WAS ONE OF MY HEROES, SOMEONE WHO DID A GREAT JOB AT HANDLING HIS WORK RESPONSIBILITIES AS WELL AS HIS PERSONAL LIFE, NEVER COMPLAINED IN PLAYING THE HAND WHICH WAS DEALT TO HIM, CARRYING ON WITH A WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOUR.   • Mr. Wilby was always kind to my brother Garry and I, and was a good friend to our dad Bill Thomas, and our uncle Art Thomas. I recall Pete telling a story of one particular mission during the war when in heavy flak his Lancaster got upside down at night over Berlin. We can only imagine what he and his mates went through in the war. Garry and I lost track of Mr. Wilby for a few years but recently learned he was in the Riverview care home. We visited him just before Christmas. Pete was very appreciative of the visit and smiled when I showed him a picture of a Lancaster that was in Winnipeg this past summer. He commented it was a good airplane and always brought him home.
