Born: Apr 11, 1926
Date of Passing: Apr 29, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROMAN SYDOR April 11, 1926 - April 29, 2012 It is with heavy hearts and infinite sadness that we have lost the patriarch of our family. Dad passed away peacefully at home among those he cherished the most, his wife and children. At the time of his transition, just outside his window, a choir of birds were heard singing. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Tatiana, sons Borden (Sophie), Paul (Lynne), daughters Rose (Bill), Donna (Oscar), granddaughters Sandy (Cory), Nadine, grandsons William and Dylan, great-granddaughters Cassidy and Jessica. He is also survived by brother Mikola and sister Milka in the Ukraine. Roman was predeceased by his parents Paul and Maria, brothers Stepan, Volodymyr and Evhenij. He was a devout Ukrainian Catholic and dedicated member of St. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral and Institute Prosvita. Roman was born on April 11, 1926 in Izdepki, W. Ukraine. At the tender age of 18 while working in Germany he was detained as a Ukrainian political prisoner in Dachau Concentration Camp from June 21, 1944 to the day of deliverance by the United States Army May 1, 1945. He met his wife Tatiana in a refugee camp in Germany where they were married. They moved to Belgium where their first son Borden was born. On December 4, 1951 they immigrated to Canada on the Maritime Vessel Fairsea and settled in Lac St. Jean, Quebec where their second son Paul was born. To find greater opportunity they moved to Winnipeg where they were blessed with two daughters Rose and Donna. Dad was a master drywaller by trade but was a family man by heart. Early retirement saw him enjoy the things he loved most. Summers spent at the family cottage, feeding the birds, planting flourishing gardens and toiling in the soil with his wife by his side. Dad was a nature lover who appreciated all God's creatures. His motto was, God put everything on this Earth and everything and everyone had a right to be here . He never viewed anything in life as a problem, only an opportunity. Facing adversity with strength, courage, grace and dignity. A private family service will be held. Vichnaya Pamyat, Rest in Peace. When we think about a man who has a deep and quiet soul - who works for what his family needs, takes pleasure in his role... When we think about a man who's had big challenges to face, We think about our Dad, about his dignity and grace. When we think about a man who in his daily life reveals, so much strength and tenderness and depth in what he feels... When we think about a man who always gave the best he can, We think about our Dad, Our lifelong hero. A good man. KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193

I came across Roman's obituary while searching for another man of similar name. I read his story and was touched by the similarities between him and my own father - what they loved, what they held most dear. You were so privileged to have had such a wonderful man to treasure for so many years. Thank God he survived Dachau, and had so many happy years. God bless you all. - Posted by: Evelyn Finn (stranger) on: Nov 28, 2012
