Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVIOLET (VIE) MARION NELSON December 22, 1976 - May 23, 2012 With heavy hearts and great sadness, we regret to announce the tragic passing of Vie Nelson on May 23, 2012 at 35 years of age. Vie leaves to mourn her passing, her loving partner Mike Hodgson and their children Asha, Allen and Chaz; her parents Glen and Violet; siblings Eric, Will and Sindy, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins as well as the many friends and community members whose lives she touched. Born in Swan River, Manitoba, Violet was the first girl born to the Nelson family in five generations. Violet was known for her humour and had an infectious laugh that warmed the hearts of everyone she knew. Family was everything to Violet, whose life revolved around her children. Her face would light up when she spoke of them and her pride was so evident. She was driven to build a future for her children and the community in which they lived. A natural leader, Violet was truly dedicated to helping others and was a passionate volunteer throughout her life. As a teen, she was a Katimavik youth volunteer for nine months in Quebec; as an adult she served as a District Commissioner with the Girl Guides of Canada developing curriculum and recruiting leaders for Aboriginal Girl Guides. For the past ten years, Violet volunteered as a board member and current chair of the Native Women's Transition Centre working tirelessly to improve the lives of women and children in the community. Violet was a whiz with numbers which led her to a career in accounting. Following her graduation from Success CompuCollege, Violet's commitment to the community remained steadfast as she chose to work within community organizations supporting those in need, including the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre, Wahbung Abinoonjiiag and most recently Graffiti Arts Programming Inc. She touched the lives of many people throughout her life and was quick to share her own experiences with others as a means of support. A Traditional Wake will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. both at the Circle of Life Thunderbird House, 715 Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kihiw Iskewok Lodge through Native Women's Transition Centre, 105 Aikens or a trust fund for Violet's children has been set up at Median Credit Union, 303 Selkirk Avenue under the Nelson Children Family Trust Fund. Everyone should consider themselves honorary pallbearers.

My symathies to Violet and Glen on the tragic passing of their lovely daughter. Of all the youth I've worked with over the years she was definitely one of the brightest lights. We road the bus together often and I could always see her bright smile-even when the bus was really crowded and she was way in the back. She was so enthusiastic and intelligent; made everything seem so effortless a strong positive role model to me when I was young and had the honor to work with her at MAC in late 90's.
