LOUISE WIEBE Louise Wiebe passed away peacefully at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg in the early hours of August 10, 2012. She leaves to mourn her passing a sister Maria Wiebe of Winnipeg and a brother Walter Wiebe with family in Germany. She was predeceased by her parents Gerhard and Elisabeth Wiebe (nee Falk) and by a brother Gerhard Wiebe. Louise was born in Gruenfeld, Ukraine on May 15, 1921. She and her mother and sister emigrated to Canada from war-torn Europe in 1948. The father died while the family was still in Ukraine and the family experienced the hardships of life which such a loss entails. War broke out while Louise was studying and the whole family was soon forced to flee, travelling through eastern Europe trying to reach the west. Gerhard died as a soldier of the German army in Hungary in 1945. Walter was forced into the German army in Poland and was separated from his family until a re-unification many years later, long after Louise, mother Elisabeth and sister Maria were in Canada. Louise worked for Cargill Grain for over 30 years. This was a happy time for her, as she still spoke warmly about her time with the company and her colleagues long after retirement from there. Louise and Maria lost their mother in 1972. The two sisters were inseparable, living together and enjoying each other's company. They were gifted in many ways and these gifts complimented each other. They loved to entertain - Mary cooked and baked while Louise decorated the house with her beautiful pictures and tablecloths. One was outgoing and talkative, the other listened and quietly supported. They were a team in so many ways. Their gardens and lovely home gave both of them great joy. Both sisters were lifelong members of First Mennonite Church Winnipeg and considered this their spiritual home. When Maria had to enter long-term care this past year, Louise got weaker and weaker. Her heart, both physically and spiritually, was broken. It didn't take long and soon Louise had to enter the Grace Hospital and she died of complications in her immune system, possibly lymphoma. She would be the first to agree that life had been good and Canada was the best country in the world. Funeral service will be held at First Mennonite Church at Alverstone and Notre Dame in Winnipeg on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. with interment at Green Acres Cemetery. Rev. Kathy Koop will conduct the service. In place of flowers, a donation to Mennonite Church Manitoba (Frohe Botschaft) would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • We lived across the street from the sisters who were always out and about either tending to their meticulously kept gardens or shoveling snow from their front walk. Being very industrious, they set a good example for our little block just off Portage Ave in the West end and other residents would struggle just to keep up! My partner would sometimes do small jobs for them and we were always rewarded with home-made treats. We had the pleasure of visiting with them in our current home during the Christmas holidays. They told incredible stories from their lives and always had a joke or two to share. My partner and I will miss Louise dearly and look forward to visits with Mary. - Posted by: Helena Marak (former neighbour) on: Aug 15, 2012

  • We lived right next door to Mary and Louise for about 3 years. They blessed us so much with their kindness and wonderful baking! Our very young daughters enjoyed seeing them out in the yard and more recently our visits to their apartment. I loved them like they were my own grandmothers. I will always treasure memories with Louise. She seemed so heartbroken that Mary was in the hospital. I hope her passing was peaceful. - Posted by: Theresa (old neighbor) on: Aug 14, 2012
