NICKOLAS SCHMIDT October 31, 1919 - September 9, 2012 It is with sad, yet grateful hearts that the family announces the passing of Nick Schmidt, age 92, of Winnipeg (formerly Elm Creek, MB) at the St. Boniface Hospital. He is survived by Lily, his wife of 63 years; children Ed (Jeanette), Esther (Elmer Froese), Barb (Dave Nudd), Jan (David Pankratz), Dave (Joanne), Pat Koop, and Phil (Pat). He was blessed with 21 grandchildren (16 spouses) and 18 great-grandchildren. He is survived by three brothers, George (Rita), John (Frieda), Vic (Vanita), one sister, Margaret (Jake Loewen), two sisters-in-law, Lena Schmidt and Ruth Schmidt as well as many nephews and nieces. Dad was predeceased by son-in-law Tom Koop, brothers Peter and Henry, sisters Anne Schmidt and Frieda Pauls, and brother-in-law Ernest Pauls. Dad was born to Peter and Margaret Schmidt on October 31, 1919 in Steinbach, Ukraine, Russia. Dad came to Canada with his family in 1924 and they eventually settled in the Elm Creek area. Dad attended school in the Wingham district and worked for local farmers in his earlier years. After the war Dad moved to Winnipeg and bought a trucking business picking up farm goods in the Carman area. Dad married Lily Friesen in 1949 and in 1954 they moved to the Culross area where together they raised their family on a mixed farm. Dad retired from full time farming in 1982 and moved back to Winnipeg where they enjoyed many years together. He continued to help two of his sons who are farming. Dad was actively involved in the Elm Creek Mennonite Brethren Church and Portage Avenue Church throughout his life. Dad was thankful to God for His faithfulness, the love and support of his wife and family. Viewing for family and friends will be held at Portage Avenue Church, 1420 Portage Avenue on Friday, September 14 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with devotional at 7:15 p.m. A celebration service at the same location on Saturday, September 15 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nick's memory to Mennonite Brethren Missions or to Family Life Network, available at the service.
