OLLIE ANNA GULY Suddenly on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 Ollie Anna Guly passed away after suffering a heart attack at her home in Winnipeg at the age of 87. Born in Winnipeg on May 11, 1925, the third child of William and Agatha Sahan (nee Dowhanyk), Ollie (Olya) grew up in the North End where she attended St. Nicholas School, North America's first Ukrainian Catholic day school, now known as Immaculate Heart of Mary School. Blessed with movie-star good looks and an outgoing personality, Ollie made a career working with numbers - first at Manitoba Cartage Co. Ltd., and later at the former International Inn where she spent decades serving as the hotel's unofficial ambassador. But it was Ollie's heart that endeared her to the many she met in the journey of life, marked in her case by endless generosity and boundless compassion for people or animals in need or forgotten. Ollie's passing has left a hole in the hearts of those whom she touched. While she was a whiz at the slot machines, Ollie placed her chances on faith as a lifelong member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. There, she sang soprano in the church choir, and was a member of both the Apostleship of Prayer and the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada (UCWLC), who now honour her memory. Ollie leaves behind in sorrow her husband of 56 years, Frank, her son, Christopher of Ottawa, brother Walter (Jean) Sahan, sister Terri Shaw, along with numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and one great-grandniece. She was predeceased by her parents, sister, Mary Sahan, brother, Nicholas Sahan, brother-in-law, Doug Shaw and niece, Sandra Sahan. A Parastas service (Prayers) will be held on Friday, October 5 (tonight) at 7:00 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St., and officiated by Rev. Fathers Isidore Dziadyk, OSBM and Zachary Shwaluk, OSBM. The UCWLC will lead the recitation of the rosary at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 6 at St. Nicholas Church, 737 Bannerman Ave., followed at 11:00 a.m. by a Divine Liturgy with the main celebrant, Father Dziadyk, the pastor, and assisted by other Basilian Fathers, Rev. Deacon Victor Humniski and Darryl Antoniw, cantor. Pallbearers will be Mark Sahan, Phil Rogers, Mel Rogers, Rob Soloman, Walter Soloway, and Andrew Sikorsky. Ollie's son, Christopher, and niece, Christine Rogers, will deliver eulogies. Ollie will be laid to rest at Holy Family Cemetery, 4355 Main St. Special thanks to Terri, Lodge, Jean and Dr. T. Babick for their care and support. Donations in Ollie's memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Although we mourn her passing, Ollie Guly will forever remain in our hearts.
