LORRAINE CAROL FLATT (January 29, 1953) Passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Freeport Hospital in Waterloo, Ontario. She was born in Winnipeg and was baptized in the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church. She completed her primary and secondary education in Winnipeg earning two degrees in English as well as two in music. Further studies took her to England and to Waterloo. She enjoyed teaching piano at the Beckett School of Music until health issues asserted themselves. In spite of severe limitations imposed on her by her illness, she found many projects that allowed the expression of her creative abilities. The art of jewellery-making with semi-precious materials was the last of these resourceful projects. She was predeceased by her father, Jack Flatt and an infant sister. She is mourned by her husband James Friesen, her mother Mary Flatt, her sister Linda, to whose care she has devoted herself selflessly for the last 10 years, one step-son George (Lise) and many relatives. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 16, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, 145 Henderson Hwy. Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee or a charity of one's choice.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I was saddened to learn of Lorraine's passing in the U of Wpg's Alumni journal. We had lost track of each other many years ago. I met Lorraine in an Honours English class. Interested in my passionate Christian faith, having lived abroad for three years, Lorraine invited me to show my slides of Israel (and the faith story attached to them) at her Young People's group at Elmwood Mennonite Church. When she moved to Waterloo to pursue her music studies, I also moved to Mississauga and we kept in touch briefly at that time. She has come to mind over the years, and I wish I had known she was still in Waterloo so that we would have reconnected more recently. My heartfelt condolences to Lorraine's family and all who loved her. Her picture is beautiful! - Posted by: Dena Hill (U of Wpg friend) on: Sep 15, 2013
