OLGA KUZENKO March 6, 1927 - January 6, 2013 Peacefully, with her daughter Marika holding her hand, Olga passed on to join Danny, her husband who predeceased her in 1998 and her beloved son Bill Kowalchuk in 2005. Left to cherish her memory is her loving daughter Marika (Mary) Barchuk (Ruffus Kennedy); nephew Darryl Kuzenko; her special friend Fedor Iwanus and other relatives in Winnipeg and Ukraine. Olga was born in Sukha Volya, Ukraine (now Poland). After the Second World War, Olga arrived in Halifax, NS on December 28, 1947 and continued westward making Winnipeg her home. Through hard work and determination, she overcame many challenges as a new immigrant. At the age of 60, Olga retired from City Bread where she worked for 32 years as a baker. She was the best! Olga also took great pride and joy in preparing her fantastic 20 course meals for family and special friends. One of her joys was spending time caring for her beautiful home and the many flowers surrounding it. Her true joy was her daughter Marika. She loved her Caribbean cruises with her Marika. Together, the two of them enjoyed this precious time together. Olga was an active parishioner of St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church, as well as being President and Vice-President of the Church's Women's League. Olga was extremely proud of her Ukrainian heritage as well as being a Canadian citizen. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the W.R.H.A. Palliative Care nurses and their program for the excellent care and guidance through this difficult time. A special thank you to Louise, our primary Palliative Care nurse. A very special thank you to Fr. Roland for his comfort, spiritual guidance and love given to both Olga and Marika. In keeping with Olga's wishes, a funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 12 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St., Winnipeg. Entombment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Flowers are graciously declined. If friends so desire, donations in Olga's memory may be made to the ALS Society of Manitoba. Goodbye Mama - We Love You. • Marika, You know how I've always felt about you and Olga. She was an amazing woman with a wonderful sense of humour and a heart of gold! To say she will be missed is an under-statement. You two had such a special bond that her passing will never break. Her last words to me on the phone were "I love you Mary", and I will never forget! I loved her. God bless you my friend. Love and Prayers, Mary x.o. - Posted by: Mary E. Jones (Loving Friend) on: Jan 14, 2013

  • Although I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Olga I did know a little bit about what a wonderful lady and friend she was. I heard about her famous baking (and had the pleasure to taste her delicious cabbage rolls shared with me by Dennis)and her beautiful flower garden. My brother Dennis talked about Olga with such pleasure and I am sorry I didn't get to meet her and see her flowers also. Fedor has lost a very dear friend that was close in his heart. To Fedor keep your special loving memories close in your heart and share the stories of your friend Olga with your friends and family. To Marika, I also heard about your loving care you gave for your Mother and as my brother said, the "very best" of care. To Mirika and family, we send our condolences for the loss of your dear Mother. May your happy memories of times spent together help to ease your loss.
