EMIL SCHROEDER It is with joy and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving father, Emil Schroeder on January 15, 2013. Joy, because we can celebrate a life well lived, the end of the pain he suffered the last months of his life and the knowledge that he is secure in the arms of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Deep sadness because he will leave a huge hole in our and many other hearts and because, even though he was 86 years old, had he not been stricken by cancer, he still had the strength and energy to live a life that was a blessing to all whose path he crossed. Emil was born in a German settlement in Pulin, Ukraine on July 30, 1926 to Hilda and Eduard Schroeder, the fifth of six surviving children. He enjoyed his earliest years on the family farm, however the impact of the Russian revolution in his formative years was such that he simply referred to it as a time that he didn't want to remember. He joined the German army as it passed through near the end of the war and made his way to Gütersloh, West Germany, where his mother and two sisters were after the war. There he apprenticed and earned his journeyman status as a roofer (Dachdeckerhandwerk) and continued to work through 1949. In late 1949, searching for better opportunities, Dad immigrated to Canada. He met Olga Bettig in early 1950 and they married on October 28. They were blessed with four children and seven grandchildren. He worked in the construction industry his entire career, initially as a tradesman and then as a company owner at Advance Acoustics Ltd. Dad was an active member of Mission Baptist Church for 60 years where he served in many capacities. He enjoyed winter vacations in Florida, initially with Mom and with friends in later years. He also enjoyed the outdoors, primarily bear hunting with friends but what he enjoyed most in his last years was serving others by cooking old country food for them, visiting shut-ins, providing transportation to those with need and helping out in the condo in whatever capacity he could. Emil was predeceased by his wife Olga in 1998. He is survived by his children Hilde (Manfred), Helga (Erroll), Art (Marion), Harry (Rita) and seven grandchildren, all residing in Winnipeg. Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Mission Baptist Church, 771 Sargent Avenue with viewing prior to the service. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery and a reception will be held at the church after the interment. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mission Baptist International Foundation Inc., 771 Sargent Ave. to assist with the continued support of Dad's sponsor child, Arpan Emmanuel at New Life Centre in Dehradun, India.

Dear Schroeder family I had some computer issues so I never finished my submission yesterday. I used to meet your dad at the cemetery . He took such good care of your mom's site, it was beautiful. He was always friendly. He volunteered to water my dad's site for which I was grateful since it is so difficult to get out often enough, May God give you strength and comfort at this difficult time and be ever so near, You are in our thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Richard and Ursula Ditchburn () on: Jan 18, 2013
