HRYHORYJ (GRZEGORZ) SZELEMEJ After a brief illness, Hryhoryj (Grzegorz) Szelemej suddenly passed away at the age of 83 on January 27, 2013, at Seven Oaks Hospital surrounded by family. Hryhoryj was born on August 18, 1929 in Liski, Sokal region, Western Ukraine. In 1947, under the order of the Polish government, his parents, along with thousands of other Ukrainian families were forced to leave their native Ukraine and resettle in Northern Poland. In 1957 Hryhoryj married Jaroslawa, and together they raised three children; Ihor, Jaroslaw and Anna. In the fall of 1980, the entire family left Poland and resettled in Winnipeg. He worked at Willmar Windows until retirement and had been an active member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral. Hryhoryj was predeceased by his parents, Dmytro and Anastasia. He is survived by Jaroslawa, his wife of 55 years, children and grandchildren, Ihor (Jo-Ann), Paul and Michael; Jaroslaw (Sonia), Kathryn and Andrew; Anna (Robert), Matthew and Daniel. To cherish his memory, he also leaves his brother in-law Theodor (Emilia) Foga and their family, as well as relatives in Poland and Ukraine. The family would like to thank Dr. Meyrowitz and the entire ICU medical team at Seven Oaks Hospital for their excellent care in trying to save our father's life. Also, thank you to Dr. J. Mayba and Dr. R. Wong for their care over the years. Prayers (panahyda) will be sung at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 3 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 4, at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St., with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat M. Buyachok officiating. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. Pallbearers are Paul, Michael and Andrew Szelemej, Robert and Matthew Fraser, and Jaroslaw Putko. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cathedral renovation fund or charity of choice.
