DOROTHY CHRISTINA MCKEAN (nee MOAR) June 9, 1945 February 11, 2013 It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing our dear mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, cousin, and friend. She is survived by her daughter Alexis (Frank), granddaughters Kirsten and Jenna, brothers Charlie (Donna) and Duke (Margaret), brother-in-law, Gary, sisters-in-law Lorena and Lucille and pet Sabrina. She was predeceased by her partner Barrie and husband James, father Alexander, mother Rubina, brothers Alfred, Alexander and Hank, sisters Margaret (Bing), Nancy, Emily and Mary, nephew Brent and pet Honey. Dorothy was a woman of many trades; she worked at Canada Post, Manitoba Education, as a waitress, hair dresser and in a group home all before finding her true calling: enriching the lives of children and their families with her creativity and imagination, we like to call; her magic. Despite all of this, her most important and cherished job was being a single mother and an exceptional grandmother. When she wasn't touching the lives of others, Dorothy enjoyed playing and supporting sports; in fact she won many provincial dart championships and was considered a top player in her time; some might say she collected gold medals. But she didn't stop there, like a true Canadian she curled and played bingo. Dorothy was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch-Fort Rouge Branch 97 where she loved to spend time with "her seniors". She enjoyed reading Sandra Brown novels, shopping for clothes, visiting with loved ones and was always ready to support her friends and family. Dorothy made it a priority to share her wisdom and values, and those who knew her respected and trusted her. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of various departments of Health Sciences Centre for their dedication and compassionate care. A celebration of Dorothy's life will take place on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler at Henderson Hwy. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dorothy's name to a charity of one's choice.

  • Dorothy was so outgoing and friendly and had a terrific laugh. We often visited when we were at the club with both Jimmy and Dorothy where Dorothy used to have her own VLT!!! We are very sorry to hear of her passing and extend our sincere sympathies to family and friends. We are not in the country right now so regretfully are unable to attend the service.
