SOPHIA TATARYN (nee CAPIAK) Peacefully with family at her side on March 6, 2013, Sophia Tataryn passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital at 88 years of age. Sophia leaves to mourn her passing her husband of 63 years, Michael William Tataryn, children Oksana (Michel) Douchant, Taras (Terri) Tataryn, Paul Tataryn, Mary (Cameron) Fehr, Marta (Alan) Ewanochko, Andrew (Halyna) Tataryn, and Peter (Regan) Tataryn, sister Iris Smith, sisters-in-law Elsie Orr and Lydia Tataryn, 19 grandchildren, Gabrielle (Sean), Raquel, Mia, David, Natalie, Samantha, Alik, Lara, Anna, Krista, Sara (Josh), Michael, Justice, Deirdre, Cheyenne, Zenya, Kalyna, Odessa, and Sasha, two great-grandchildren, Tina and Isaac, and nieces and nephews, Annette, Geraldine, Lauretta, Susan, Lisa, Chris, Teresa, Elizabeth, and Edward. She was predeceased by her parents, Dan and Olga Capiak, parents-in-law, William and Frances Tataryn, brother Walter Capiak, brothers-in-law, Maurice and Walter (Frances) Tataryn, brothers-in-law, Jack Smith, Gerald Aubin, and niece Patricia. Mom was born in 1925 in Lesiwsti, Western Ukraine. In 1933 she travelled by ship and train to Dorion, Ontario with her mother and brother to join her father who was already here. They lived and farmed in the picturesque Ouimet Canyon area. She received her nurse's training in nearby Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) and graduated in 1948. She met her husband Michael Tataryn in Thunder Bay and they were married in Winnipeg in 1950 during the Red River Flood. There followed many happy years as she and Michael raised their growing family. They made many wonderful friends and memories in different parts of the country where they lived, Neepawa, Pine Falls, Prince George, Dauphin, and Winnipeg. Mom returned to nursing once the children grew up, and over the years kept in touch with fellow nursing classmates, meeting at many memorable reunions. She also shared with Dad memorable vacations to Alaska and Hawaii, the highlight being a trip to Ukraine to visit relatives. Mom's main focus in life was her family and her Ukrainian Catholic faith. She was a long time member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League and enjoyed singing in the church choir for many years. She was a loving mother and grandmother to all of us and she always had time to listen to anyone who dropped by. She loved cooking, making perogies and hosting family gatherings especially at the holidays. Mom was in her glory with her family around her. She was a gentle, kind, compassionate and giving person, always putting family ahead of herself. Many heartfelt thanks to the staff at Holy Family Care Home and the St. Norbert Care Home for their support in the last years of Sophia's life. Prayer Service (Panachyda) will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue. Funeral Services (Paratas) at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church followed by Interment (Burial) at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Church on Red River Drive. A Memorial Luncheon (Tryzna) will follow at Howden Hall on Red River Drive where friends and family are welcome to offer their memories of Sophia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Women's League of Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church. VICHNA YIM PAMYAT Funeral Home Crematorium 204-774-7474 Condolences: www.bardal.ca

  • To Michael and his family, I am saddened to hear of Sophia's passing away. She was a good church friend of mine - pleasant in nature and, true to her Ukrainian heritage, always hospitable and caring. She will be remembered as one who extended her admirable "nursing traits" of understanding, patience and tolerance to not only everyone around her, but to the circumstances that befell her the last couple of years. May good memories of Sophia be a source of comfort as you face still another turn in the Road of Life...and may our Compassionate Lord cradle you in His arms during this time of sorrow.
