Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARIA JAKOWEC 1922 - 2013 Maria Jakowec passed away peacefully on March 13, 2013 at the age of 90. Maria was born in Tatariv, Hutzulshchyna, Ukraine, on November 18, 1922. She was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage and always spoke fondly of her childhood and youth in the beauty of the Karpathian mountains. Fearing Communist invasion they left Ukraine for Slovakia, then Germany and finally immigrated to Canada in 1950. She settled first in Lockport and then in Winnipeg, MB. Determined to return one day to Ukraine, she fulfilled her dream and eventually visited and travelled around Ukraine in her 80s. She was an active member and volunteer at Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural Center and Plast Ukrainian Youth Organization. Maria is survived by her son Ihor, her niece Chrystyna Choptiany (Ihor) and their children Ariadna, Maxym, Platon, Renata, all of Winnipeg; nephew Roman Sawka (Nina) and their children Alexandra, Mishka (Henryk), Max, all of Toronto; nephew Roman Myhaluk; niece Marijka Raptis (Tom) and their children Nikolaos, Christina; niece Donna (Dave) and their children Jasmine and Brianna, all of Vancouver and many relatives and friends in Canada and Ukraine. Maria was predeceased by her husband Stefan; her daughter Luba Kwasney; her parents Petro and Wasylyna Myhaluk; her sisters Paraskevia and Anna; and brothers Oleksa, Petro and Yura. Funeral Service (Parastas/Panachyda) will be sung at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2013 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat M. Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural Center or Plast Ukrainian Youth Organization.
