Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Dear Dennis, I was at the Grace Hospital today for a CT Scan and on the way out I dropped into the Spiritual Care office to visit our good friend Major Gordon Jarvis. It dawned on me that Gordon was never mentioned as the Clergyman who officially presided over your memorial. I wanted to just say hi, and perhaps arrange to meet for lunch if he so wished. Gordon has retired and I'm sure you will join me in wishing him a lengthy, healthy and happy retirement. I left a message for Gordon to call me, and when we meet, I will be sure to remind him of how much you appreciated the care he gave you, and the beautiful ceremony he delivered at your memorial. Bye Dennis, we miss you. Kathy, Ron Elaine and family - Posted by: Ron Webster (Brother) on: Oct 15, 2014

  • Dear Dennis, I has been 1 year since you entered into eternal peace. We think of you often and smile and laugh with our memories of you; and sometimes we cry, because we miss you so. You are forever in our hearts and our minds. Love Kathy & Ron - Posted by: Kathy & Ron Webster (Sister-in-law & Brother) on: Mar 22, 2014

  • Dennis gave me my first job when I was a teenager. I worked with him for a few years till he moved on but we stayed in touch, speaking at least a few times a year. He was a very cool guy and could fit in even with people decades his junior. The world was a much better place with him in it. - Posted by: R Frank McAuley (Friend) on: Jul 17, 2013

  • Dennis, today would be your 69th Birthday. We take solace in knowing you are no longer suffering Dennis; but your family surely misses you. Until we meet again, Dennis Until we meet again. - Posted by: Ron Webster (Brother) on: May 01, 2013

  • I worked with Dennis at the Woodsworth Building for many years. He was an excellent chef and was always to offer hints to doing a good job. Ken, to you I offer my sincere sympathy and remember my prayers are with you at all times. Take care and get in touch at any time. I am very sorry that I will not be with you on Friday but I will be thinking of you. Sincerely Sharon Gordon - Posted by: Sharon Gordon (Friend and co-worker) on: Apr 03, 2013

  • My very deepest sympathy to Ken, and the family. I knew Dennis through my brother, Norm Greer, and enjoyed his company, friendliness, and his kindness. We were very sorry to hear of his illness, and now of his passing. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We trust that your treasured memories of a life, and time, shared together will bring you comfort as you go through this difficult time. - Posted by: Marie and Merv Robinson (friend) on: Apr 02, 2013

  • I worked with Dennis at the Montcalm Hotel a number of years ago. I will always remember Dennis for his sense of humor and his quick wit. • To Dennis, my Brother, my Friend. Dennis came into my life, or as Dennis would have you believe, I came into his life, 64 years ago. Either way, we had no choice that we were brothers, but it was our choice to be friends. We were the best of friends for as long as I can remember; we were always there for each other in the time of need; and always together for happy celebrations. Everybody that knew Dennis knows he loved his family and friends. He cared about the people in his life. He never forgot a birthday or many other memorable occasions. I also know that Dennis was an exceptional employer. I know of several of Dennis’ former employees who became lifelong friends. I recall that one of his waitresses, Alma, had moved “back home” to Pembroke Ontario after she retired. They continued to keep in touch and sometime later, Alma fell seriously ill. Dennis took the time to fly out and spend a week with her shortly before her passing. I truly believe Dennis was the inspiration for the comic book character, Dennis the Menace. By the time the comic character was launched, Dennis was already 7 years old with quite a reputation for getting into mischief; like the time he and our brother Kenny blew the mail box off the front of our house on Egerton Road with a blockbuster! Another incident involved our veterinarian neighbor in Elkhorn, Doc Heanan. He had a few chickens within an enclosure behind their house. From somewhere came the idea to get some rope and lasso the chickens; so we made a lasso and slid it under the fence and when a chicken stepped inside the rope, we gave it a tug and lassoed us a chicken. Now we had no way to release the chicken so it would flutter and squawk trying to get away. Of course Doc Heanan heard the ruckus and came over to see what was going on so we were caught red handed! I also know some stuff about Dennis that very few people know. For example, how many of you know that Dennis could sing? … well, he could! The Associated Canadian Travelers Talent Show would come to Elkhorn once a year and Dennis was a contestant for at least two years running. The song I remember him singing was Moon River. I don’t recall if he won or not but Dennis recounted that at Elkhorn’s 125th Reunion in 2007, he met Mrs. Bernice Shoemaker who played the piano for Dennis. As he approached her he asked if she remembered him … Mrs. Shoemaker responded “of course I do, I banged on the piano – you sang Moon River!” Dennis, whenever I need a smile, I will think of you. Good bye my Brother, my Friend. Love Ron - Posted by: Ron Webster (Brother) on: Apr 01, 2013
