CHARLES ROBERT (CHUCK) STEWART
Date of Passing: Apr 01, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHARLES ROBERT (CHUCK) STEWART April 19, 1925 - April 1, 2013 Chuck Stewart, our beloved Gigi, slipped peacefully into Eternity, with family by his side, on Monday, April 1, 2013 at the Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 87. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 65 years, Jean (nee Onysko); his children Alan and Nancy Stewart, Dr. Elaine Stewart Stapon and Grant Stapon, Paul and Judy Stewart, and John and Susan Stewart; his grandchildren Scott Stewart and Kelly Boulay, Patrick Stewart and Amanda Hartley, Lindsay and Brandon Jones, Claire Stapon and Michael Minister, Corey Stewart and Elizabeth Bager, Randy and Bryn Stewart, Brent Stewart, Erik Stewart, and Justin Welgush, and his great-grandchildren Adam, Violet, Blake, Jaidyn, Heather and Paisley. Chuck was born and raised in Winnipeg, the only child of Charles and Mary Jean (nee Mackie) Stewart. He started working for the C.P.R. at age 15, first as an express messenger, then in the office, and finally as a refrigeration mechanic, retiring after 42 years of dedicated employment. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having voluntarily enlisted at the age of 19. He fought, and was wounded, overseas, serving in the Lake Superior Regiment. One of the legacies he left us was the memoir he wrote of his war experiences. Chuck was an active member of Holy Eucharist parish, where for many years he was busy in the kitchen on Thursday mornings, cooking batch after batch of pyrogies, a rare feat for a man raised by Scottish parents! He instilled in his children a love of people, community, nature, travel and the outdoors. He spent long hours at the local outdoor hockey rinks teaching his children and grandchildren to skate, and at Bird's Hill Park, a favourite place of his, teaching his children to cross-country ski and drive. He also taught them to swim, and took delight in many a sunny day at the beach spent with his family. He loved taking them on cross-Canada train trips as well as road trips. He passionately enjoyed watching hockey and other sporting events, especially if family and friends were cheering with him. Chuck was a hard-working, honest, warm and generous man with a great sense of humour, always ready to help out others. He was a devoted family man and provider, a talented handyman (thank you, Dad, for the playhouse, the wooden toys and lawn ornaments) and a loyal friend; all who knew him will miss him greatly. He is now smiling down on those who had the privilege of sharing his life with him. The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Deer Lodge Centre for their competent and compassionate care of Gigi over the last 15 months. And of course to Baba for her devoted, loving care of him in their home for the 12 years prior. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 8 at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 505 Watt Street at Munroe Avenue, with Fr. Michael Kwiatkowski officiating. Private interment will take place at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Bird's Hill Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10 - 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2, or a charity of one's choice. Rest in peace, Gigi. We will always remember and love you. CHRYSTOS VOSKRES CHRIST IS RISEN KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193

Dear Aunt Jean and Family Our love and prayers are sent to you and your family as you mourn the passing of dear Uncle Chuck. From Halifax, we want to convey that we are very saddened and share in your loss. Uncle Chuck was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle to a widespread family, as well as a good friend to many others. Distance kept us from being near and growing up knowing you all as well as I would have liked. Despite that, we had a living connection through our dear father, William Onysko, as he would so fondly and frequently tell us about you and the life of your family in Winnipeg. We also know how loving, caring and dedicated you were, Aunt Jean. Uncle Chuck was deeply blessed to have had such a kind, tender, strong, and wonderful spouse; you gave so much of yourself to attend to his needs in good health and poor, over all the years you had together. This will provide you with special memories and comfort as you move through this difficult time and in the future. We wish we could be there; please know that our thoughts and love are with you all. May your faith in God bring you strength and love as you say farewell. Love always, Kathryn and Greg, Andrew and Ryan xo - Posted by: Kathryn Onysko Ross (niece) on: Apr 12, 2013

My thoughts and prayers are with you all throughout this difficult time. Although distance made my knowing Uncle Chuck minimal, I feel that I know him better because of stories I heard through my conversations with Auntie Jean. I especially think of Uncle Chuck every Remembrance Day because of the memoir he wrote of his time on the front line during WWII. Thank you for sharing his remarkable story with us. Auntie Jean, I wish I was there to give you a big hug. You have been a remarkable and dedicated wife for so many years, and always took everything you faced in stride. I hope you find comfort in knowing that you did everything humanly possible to make your husband's life as good as it could be. xoxo - Posted by: Mary Anne van Gaal (nee Onysko) (niece) on: Apr 12, 2013

Mrs. Stewart (Jean), your husband Chuck is greatly missed already by our family. We had the joy of coming to know you and Chuck through your daughter Elaine's marriage to our brother Grant Stapon. I was 15 when the marriage took place, but knew you, your daughter and three sons for a long while before that time. What I always remember is you and our Dad, Norm Stapon, tackling many automotive projects (especially with 9 children between you - and in later years numerous grandchildren). You fixed our cars, without expectation of any pay, and I remember one incident in my life when I had to sell everything I owned in order to continue to battle an ugly divorce 3 provinces away. I was a single mom, who now had no vehicle. My Dad shared with me, that you knew of a car that was older and in excellent shape (I know now that was your personal car) and you sold it the day you found out to my dad, or should I say gave it away to my Dad. Without saying a word, Dad drove your car to Calgary and showed up at my door with keys dangling. I cried at the kindness you extended to me when all I was feeling was defeat. That you gave up your reliable (and working air conditioned car) for me. Well I drove that car for 5 long years and it kept me and my son safe and it always started. It was those memories, those kindnesses, those times spent together with your kids and ours, at the lake, or eating Mrs. Stewarts and her sister/sister-in-law great Ukrainian cooking. Special occasions our newly blended families had together, Alan always taking his son Patrick and mine on every outdoor adventure that you can think of...and my son loved every minute...Chuck, you can be proud of who you are, the children that you had, and the magnificent human beings they became. And now, so many grandchildren and great-grand children. What a legacy to leave, especially when you are loved by so many. From our heart and homes to yours, much love. I miss you but promise never to forget your kindness. I pay it forward often, as that was a great lesson to learn. Thanks Chuck...You too made a wonderful difference in my life too. Love you lots~ - Posted by: April Stapon & Garry Palahitski (Close family friend, related through Marriage) on: Apr 08, 2013

We have had the pleasure of knowing Chuck & Jean from the early 1970's when Grant became a member of the Stewart family when he married Elaine. (lucky Guy Grant:) We, as an extened family, have many fond memories of fishing stories and family occassions over the years. Chuck always brought forth a great sense of family & community. Chuck always had a great sense of humour and was up to any challange, (and survival) with all of my brothers, husband Brian and my father (Norm Stapon). Chuck, may you now rest in peace and look over your beautiful wife Jean, your amazing family and grandchildren. You will be dearly missed. Chuck, you will be missed. We thank you for our service to our Country as well as our community and the many friends and family that you inspired with your humor, good nature and strong work ethic. Thank you for making those sunny Manitoba hot summer days more bearable. The complimentary air conditioning work on my old car made our summer more enjoyable. The time that we spent at Falcon Lake doing odd jobs with Grampa as well as catching an occasional fish are also very fond memories. The mechanical aptitude that you were willing to share gave me the ability to wrench on an old lawn mower. Those days often ended in a bowl of church prepared home made food. And when I got older, it sometimes even included a Carling beer. Your legacy lives on in the hearts and souls of those that love you. You will be missed, but never forgotten. To the family know that we appreciate what a difficult time this is and our deepest regret is not being able to be with you to support you during this moment. Our spirit and thoughts will be with you. Winnipeg has lost one of her finest.
