CHRISTINE ANN CHORNOBOY
Born: Jun 22, 1954
Date of Passing: Apr 18, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHRISTINE ANN CHORNOBOY June 22, 1954 - April 18, 2013 It is with deep sadness that we grieve the loss of Christine Ann Chornoboy, who at the much too young age of 58, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013. By her own admission Christine was a storyteller. No one told a better story than she did. She could make a story about the most everyday incident come alive with humour and compassion. Family and friends could always count on Christine for a story or a corny joke. Nothing made her happier than a good laugh with those she loved. Her working life of 39 years was dedicated to Safeway. Chris was proud of her position and the respect she earned from fellow employees. The words of Marguerite Lambert reflect the experience of many customers who were served by Christine, "I will always remember her beautiful and vibrant smile that greeted me every time I walked into her' Safeway." Volunteerism played a big part of Christine's life. She read stories for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind to produce audio books and was accepted as a voluntary newsreader for the CNIB Amateur Radio Station. She was also a regular blood donor until her health no longer permitted her that honour. When Gordon Sinclair, Winnipeg Free Press columnist, invited his readers to share their funeral plans, Christine responded by saying that her headstone would read, "I'D RATHER BE READING", and added, "I was born in 1954. It was a very good year!" to which Sinclair responded, thanking her for her insightful wit. Christine lent a helping hand wherever she could. Whether it was giving a complete stranger cash to take her children to the zoo because she overheard the mother reminding her children that going to the zoo cost money she did not have; or offering people who came to their house asking for directions to Brandon, a case of water for their journey; or crocheting baby blankets for neighbours and friends; Christine was there. Christine's winters were highlighted with trips to Cuba with Joe. On each trip, she stuffed her luggage with supplies for Cuban children, and books for her to read in the sun - about one novel a day suited her just fine. Nothing was more important to Christine than her family and friends. Each of them will miss her dearly. She will be especially remembered with love by her life's partner, Giuseppe (Joe) Aiello, her mother Joan Chornoboy, Rita Aiello and Ryan Popilchak, Rita and Joe Cuda, Peter and Yolanda Aiello, Larry and Eleanor Chornoboy, Shirley (Lisa and Marc) Fourneaux, Lynn Roy, Wendy Corley, Joyce Queck, Brenda Ness, her Safeway friends and the many, many friends and family whose lives and hearts she touched. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. #1 East at Navin Road. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to make donations to Manitoba Multiple Myeloma CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Room 1018, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9. My deep condolences go out to Joe and Christine's family. My husband Murray and Christine were friends through the Multiple Myeloma Support Group at CancerCare Manitoba. They listened to each others ups and downs with this cancer and always supported each other and everyone else in the group. When Murray died in May 2012, Christine came to his funeral and she gave me a very beautiful card with a special message in it. We began a friendship via telephone calls and emails. I'll miss those -- you always had something positive to say Christine. Gone is your suffering and pain and like Murray and all the others from support group who have passed away, you'll be smiling down on everyone from heaven now. My best memory of Chris was within my first 2 yrs working on the day shift with Chris, it was a early Friday evening we were lined up to beat the band and a very irate customer came through my line-up. Chris spotted a very intense situation called the mgr and proceeded to relieve me and said take a walk outside come back in take a big breath and smile like nothing ever happened. ''WOW'', Thanks Chris you made a better person out of me that day. I know she made that customer feel 2 inches smaller because the next day that customer came back and apologized to both of us. To Joe & families my deepest condolences and my prayers will always be with you. - Posted by: Robb (co-worker & friend) on: May 05, 2013

What a great first day it was when you were transferred to 716 Safeway, the beginning of a great friendship. So sad that I just found out I will never see your beautiful smile again. My heart goes out to you Joe and the family, she was way too young to leave us so soon. Such a great person you were Christine till we meet again in heaven. Joe this one's for you "Fin quando non ci rivedremo te cielo Christina" Love, Lynn Pohl (variety manager 716 Safeway) 1(204)641-6401 - Posted by: lynn pohl (716 safeway ) on: Apr 29, 2013

I remember Christine for her energy and passion - she really had an intense appreciation for life and people. Back in the day, the whole Safeway crew - older staff and high schoolers - all went for drinks and snacks together on paydays! It was like family! I recall how Christine's dad got her a car plate that read "Christine - I am totally evil!" - from the B-grade movie about a possessed car! I appreciated her quirky humour - this is just one example. Hard to think of Christine not being around - she exuded so much energy, and who can forget that deep, distinctive laugh? My deepest sympathies to Christine's family and loved ones. - Posted by: Pam Hadder (Mihaychuk) (co-worker - Safeway in the 80s) on: Apr 29, 2013

Chris was my first boss, she taught me right from wrong and took me under her wing at work. She believed in me always! A strong woman who would always help me out. I couldn't have asked for a better "teacher". Every time I see a pen with a neck string attached I always think of her! A Beautiful woman inside and out! Thank you for believing in me Chris! Rest in paradise! - Posted by: Shannon Sylvester (Safeway Employee (She mentored me) ) on: Apr 26, 2013

Anyone who knew Christine feels the same emptiness in the pit of their stomach, but at the same time, a full heart knowing they were able to share in her life. Thank you Christine for being in mine. Though our friendship covered many, many years, for the most part was low maintenance. Whenever we met up, it was as if no time had passed between visits and the laughter would start almost instantaneously. I’ll miss that raspy laugh of yours. Save a seat for me at the bar girlfriend and let’s make it a double. Cheers’ Christine! Love Maria - Posted by: Maria Enright Mackenzie (Friend Forever) on: Apr 25, 2013

Dear Joe and family, I was saddened to learn of Christine's passing. Reading some of the comments from her many friends is an indication of the many lives she so humbly touched. Heaven will be that much richer with her presence. Treasure the wonderful memories that you both created. Christine was such a positive and happy person. I really enjoyed working with her as she volunteered at the CNIB, helping create talking books for the visually impaired. Along with Brenda, Bernice, Phil and Tanya, our Tuesday after-work crew was great! Christine and I had some Safeway employment in common, and I remember when "Joe" came into her life. She was a fine narrator, too, and her voice lives on in the CNIB archives. Farewell, Christine - farewell! - Posted by: D. Dear Christine and Joe, Joe, I wish we had been given more time to get to know each other. It is obvious to all, that your love for each other is boundless. I am grateful to you for filling Christine’s life with joy and endless devotion. There is little more that I can say that others have not already said about Christine’s infectious personality. Her pragmatic nature left no room for conjecture as to the quality of her character. For me, bringing her back is as simple as shutting my eyes. Her sonata fills my heart with a lifetime of love, laughter and compassionate moments, of stories as only she could tell, of the honesty and integrity she expected of us all and of unrelenting loyalty of which I am humbled for not having been more deserving. Thank you for being there Christine, for always telling me where to find the best bargains, cheering me up when I was down, for mending my broken heart, for putting trust in me, for choosing my shoulder to cry on, for not telling me only what I wanted to hear and for never ever closing your door. I am grateful to you for allowing me to be a part of the wonderfully successful life you have lead and I shall endeavor to carry forward some of the goodness you have bestowed upon all who know and love you. Until we all meet again, Love Paul - Posted by: Paul Burgoyne (Live-long friend ) on: Apr 23, 2013

I bought my first house on Paddington Rd, right next to Christine. I swear she was on my doorstep before I could close the door behind the movers...of course, she had her welcoming beautiful smile (and some tips on being a new home owner)...from that moment on, our friendship took root and grew (just like her garden, that I raided on occasion). Over the 10 years we were neighbors, I always told her she was forbidden to move because she was the best neighbor in the world and I was never going to let her go (I have two male dogs that were in love with Brandie, so that was another reason)!!! There were many times I would see her family visiting and I would immediately peek over the fence, because I knew I would be invited to join the fun! That was yet another reason to love being her neighbor, her wonderful family!!! I received so much love from Joe, mom, dad, Shirley, Lisa, and most family and friends that I would visit with regularly... When I decided to move to Greece, I was heart broken that I was leaving the woman who became my teacher, sister, mother, confidant and a dear friend!!! Christine even made two little teddy bears for my dogs, Teddie and Bailie, with love from Auntie! I was truly blessed when Christine came into my life, as was everybody who's life she touched... she will be sadly missed!!! My love and sympathies to Joe, Mom and family!!! xoxo - Posted by: Serena Rigby (Friend (old neighbor)) on: Apr 21, 2013

We used to have so many good laughs together as we worked! Christine loved to hear the stories about my kids when they were litte gaffers & then always bust a gut with laughter! No more pain, no more suffering - gone to soon but never in pain again! You were a real trooper and I admire you for that! Always your friend! From the time i met Christine at grade school I was taken by her outgoing nature. Her smile took up the full width of her face, and her laugh was so distinct in the halls of windsor park collegiate. At the 50th year reunion in 2012..Christine still sparkled through her beautiful blue eyes. The courage behind those eyes was immense. Throughout her cancer she remained positive. When you went into "her" Safeway you were always greeted with a wave or a little joke. Christine, growing up i always admired your verve for life. Read to those in heaven. I know they will listen. Bless you !! - Posted by: Laurie Gyde (School friend ) on: Apr 20, 2013
