OLGA ELSIE LEWICKI (nee SASK) August 8, 1915 - April 18, 2013 After a long and full life, Mom peacefully left us to begin her eternal journey on April 18, 2013, at the Riverview Health Centre. Olga was predeceased by her husband Walter; her sister Anne Jast (Edmund); her grandson Steven Romaniw; and her beloved nieces Terese and Kathryn Jast. Left to remember the wonderful life they had together are her daughters: Marilyn Dolenko (Allan), Irene Romaniw (Oleh) and Pat Lewicki (Paul LaRiviere). Missing their Gram will be Michael Dolenko (Helen Kula), Kristen Dolenko (Andre Beaulieu), Martha Klapprat (Jody), Eric and his father John Shopka. Special to Olga's heart were her great-grandchildren: Harriet and Lucy Dolenko, émile Beaulieu and Léo Dolenko and Sebastian and Madelynne Klapprat. The elder daughter of Michael and Paraskevia Sarakula (nee Stanchak), she was born in Point Douglas and lived in Winnipeg's North End her entire life. Olga graduated from St. John's High School in 1931 and from Normal School in 1933. She taught from 1933 to 1941 when she married Walter. While raising her daughters, she continued teaching English as a Second Language to new Canadians through the YMCA. After Walter's untimely passing in 1961, Olga returned to teaching. Through hard work and determination she received her Bachelor of Pedagogy from the University of Manitoba in 1972. Olga loved teaching and was a positive role model for countless students until she retired in 1981. Olga was a very social person and participated in many volunteer activities over the years. She was a founding member of the Ukrainian Canadian Athletic Club and the Holy Family Home Ladies' Auxiliary. She was also a long time parishioner at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. She loved to knit, to travel and entertain. There were many, many gatherings featuring great food on Machray Avenue and at the family cottages at Whytewold and Ponemah. She was a generous and loving woman and will be missed by many. Her family would like to take this opportunity to thank her many friends at the Holy Family Tower for their love and support during the last decade of her life. We would also like to extend a thank you to her home care workers, as well as the nurses and aides at Riverview Palliative Care for their help over the past weeks. A memorial service for Olga will be held on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street, Winnipeg, with Fr. Gabriel Haber, OSBM officiating. In lieu of flowers, should friends so wish, donations may be made in Olga's memory to Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate Lubov Foundation, 1085 Main Street, Winnipeg, R2W 3S1; The CNIB, 1080 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, R3G 3M3; to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation, 1 Morley Street, Winnipeg, R3L 2P4; or to the charity of one's choice. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Mrs. Lewicki was my most wonderful grade 6 teacher, who made such a difference in my life, that I too, became a teacher. Mrs. Lewicki believed in me and encouraged me to become an honours student, when I did not believe in myself. She gave me a leading role in our school play, Howdy Cowboy, and always inspired me with positive caring. Mrs. Lewicki also tutored my younger sister, Kathy, who had a broken leg. My sister asked that I let you know that Mrs. Lewicki was a shining light in her long and boring day at home. Mrs. Lewicki encouraged and expected high standards from my sister, who enjoyed the challenge. We both have wonderful, cherished memories of a warm, kind, and inspirational teacher. We feel so blessed to have had her in our lives! - Posted by: irene stevenson (former student) on: May 06, 2013

  • I remember Mrs. Lewicki when she worked with students with disabilities at Daniel MacIntyre in the 1970s. She was kind but firm with her students and helped them build their self-esteem regardless of their circumstances. She also encouraged her students' friends to be supportive and demonstrated how we could also be of assistance in helping to encourage and build up others in times of difficulty. "Well done, good and faithful servant." - Posted by: Janice Clarke () on: Apr 27, 2013

  • Mrs Lewicki was a very caring and wonderful person. I will always treasure the friendship that we shared. I am sorry to hear of her passing. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Agnes Danielson ((Former HCA)) on: Apr 27, 2013

  • I remember when I was very young I had broken my leg and Mrs. Lewicki was my at home tutor. She was such a wonderful teacher! I still recall her telling me if you set your mind to something there is nothing you can't do. Even though forty some odd years have passed I will always remember her saying that to me. My heartfelt sympathy to all of you - Posted by: Donna Beyak (student) on: Apr 27, 2013

  • I never talked with Olga at events that I didn't come away thinking how lucky I was to know such a wonderful lady! She always remembered who I was even as she came into her 90s and we didn't meet often. A warm and wise individual who truly lived the maximum life has to offer. A lady who brought light and brilliance to everyday occasions and conversations. Someone to emulate! I was so fond of her. She will be missed so very much! - Posted by: Helen Feniuk (Sorority sister and friend) on: Apr 23, 2013

  • We have fond memories of Olga sharing her life experiences and wisdoms of the world. She was an entertaining lady and a worldly traveller. I remember her visiting us in Australia and seeing her a few years ago in Canada. She will always be remembered for her vitality of life. - Posted by Joanne Sarakula (nee Hrycak) - Posted by: Joanne & Michael Sarakula (Close Family Friends) on: Apr 23, 2013

  • Mrs Lewicki was my mom and dad's neighbour when they lived on Cathedral Ave. and she lived on Machray. Then again neighbours on the 4th floor of the Holy Family Sr.'s Tower. My mom Dorothy passed in 2008. She always appreciated Olga's friendship. A wonderful lady!!! - Posted by: Sharon LaBine (former neighbour) on: Apr 20, 2013
