STEFANIE BARTHEL 1927 - 2013 With peaceful courage, Stefanie (Steffi) Barthel passed away on May 4, 2013 at the age of 86. She will be lovingly remembered by daughter Barbara Zaporzan (Allen) of Winnipeg, son Roland Latajka (Anne), her grandchildren Michael Latajka (Robin), Monika Hall (Paul), all of Calgary, Michelle Widynowski (Richard) of Edmonton and Mom's five great-grandchildren Maya, Brooklyn, Kiera, Samantha and Owen. As well as brother Frank Hornung (Ursula), nieces, nephews, and extended Barthel family and friends in Winnipeg and Germany. Steffi was born in Lemberg, Poland on March 22, 1927 to Franz and Anna Hornung. She lived through the turmoil of war and the death of her first husband Herbert Latajka in 1961 and her sister Maria Rauth in Germany. Mom immigrated to Canada in 1968 to make a new life where she soon became an active and honorary member for 25 years of the Winnipeg German Society and Choir. In Winnipeg, she met and married Bill Barthel who predeceased her on March 19, 1984. Family was everything to Mom. She was a woman of incredible determination and strength. Her abilities as a hostess, homemaker, gardener and cook were well known to her family and friends as were her famous "Torten". Her life full of passion and perseverance left a lasting impression on us and she will be greatly missed. The family would like to sincerely thank all the staff who lovingly cared for and showed kindness and compassion to our Mother while she resided at Bethania Personal Care Home. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Steffi's memory to the Parkinson's Society of Manitoba, 7 - 414 Westmount Drive, Winnipeg, MB R2J 1P2. Funeral services will be held from the Green Acres Funeral Home, Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow in the Green Acres Cemetery. GREEN ACRES Funeral Home and Cemetery (204) 222-3241 Hwy. #1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg, MB Condolences may be sent to: www.greenacresfuneralhome.com
