ROMAN MACKOW 1929 - 2013 Peacefully, on Sunday, May 19, 2013, Roman passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 84. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Frieda of 60 years, his two daughters Sylvia (Graham) and Linda (Gary), and his grandchildren Ryan, Jeffery, Derek (Kryssi), Katie, Chelsea, and his precious great-grandson Mason. He will be remembered by all that knew him for his kind heart, wonderful sense of humour, and the value he placed on his long time friendships. In keeping with his wishes, no formal service will be held. If friends so desire, they may make a donation in Roman's memory to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation-Cardiovascular Research. "Opa, we will never forget you!"

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Onkel Roman and Tante Frieda were among the first lifelong friends of my parents after they emigrated from Austria to Winnipeg. When I was very little, he was a wonderful surrogate uncle. A generous, kind, and patient man who did have a great sense of humor. He had an enormous wink that would occupy the entire half of his face. Onkel Roman and his family visited us in Dryden when I was very young. One of my first childhood memories was the Mackows pulling up in their white '64 Chevy 4-door and the man getting out smiling and giving me his exaggerated wink. - Posted by: Richard Pawelka (Son of Friends Herbert and Theresa Pawelka) on: May 30, 2013

  • I have so many memories & photos of events our families were at! I had known you since I was 2! My parents were long time friends with you & Friedl! With my spouse, Pat, you entertained us at a Jets Hockey (original team!) game after eating at a local Schnietzel house in Winnipeg around 1980 when Friedl & Sylvia had to work! You will be deeply missed but thought of often!!! Say hello to my parents!! - Posted by: Trudy & Pat Holland (Long time Friends) on: May 30, 2013

  • We are very sorry to hear of Roman's passing. Things I remember; when he first came to Canada in 1952, he was a young man of about 23 years of age. Roman, along with my two brothers Bob & Walter stopped at a store on Higgins Avenue in 1952; Roman purchased the first ball point pen I had ever seen. I recall the visit Roman, Frieda, Sylvia & Linda made to our first home in Port Moody BC when they came to Vancouver in 1967. Will always remember above all his sense of humor and how gentle and kind he was. - Posted by: Stan & Eleanor Kuzak (Cousin) on: May 26, 2013
