LAUREL MARGARET JASPER It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Laurel Jasper on Friday, May 24, 2013. Laurel was born in Winnipeg on November 13, 1953 to Florence and William Hughes. She grew up in the Morse place area of East Kildonan, where she met and married her husband Glenn Jasper in 1972. Laurel was predeceased by her husband Glenn and her parents Bill and Flo Hughes. She is survived by her daughter Jenna Jasper (Jay), beloved grandchildren Parker and Jacob, brother Bill Hughes (Lynda) their children Dylan and Kylie, and cousin, Arla Bauer and family. Laurel was a fun loving individual who enjoyed her years involved with the Monroe Huskies Baseball team, the girls' weekends at Lac Lu, fishing at Flanders Lake with Glen, and time she spent with her grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Laurel was never afraid to speak her mind, had a witty and wicked sense of humour. Although she never thought of herself as a philanthropist, we believe she donated regularly to various casinos and bingo halls. We would like to thank the staff, doctors and nurses at Concordia Hospital for the incredible effort they put in over a 24 hour period to save Laurel's life. We truly appreciate your efforts. "When I must leave you for a little while, Please do not grieve and shed sad tears, And hug your sorrow to you through the years, But start out bravely with a gallant smile; And for my sake and in my name Live on and do all things the same, But fill each waking hour in useful ways, Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer And I in turn will comfort you And hold you near! And never, never be afraid to die For I am waiting for you in the sky. This life for me is truly past. I've loved you all to the very last. Weep not for me, but courage take, And love one another for my sake". A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4 in the chapel Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler at Henderson Hwy. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Laurel's memory to the Concordia Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Jenna, we are so sorry to hear about your mom's passing. We have many fond memories of your mom and dad and grandparents on the 24th of may setting off fireworks along with our grandparents that we will certainly cherish. - Posted by: Holmes family () on: Jun 05, 2013

  • Laurel and I were childhood friends and had many great times growing up like going to school dances, playing cards on a Saturday nite with her Mom Flo and Arla and hanging out at Lily's Chinese restaurant sharing a plate of fries and gravy. She had such a contagious loud laugh that one time the owner of Lily's told her "you laugh like horse" and banned her from the restaurant but only for a short time. My thoughts are with her family as she has left way too soon! - Posted by: Bev Bauer (Childhood friend) on: Jun 04, 2013

  • Jenna i am so very sad to just learn of Laurel's passing. I am so grateful that while in Wpg from Calgary last yr. I stopped in to surprise your mother with a visit. We laughed like when we were kids, a memory I will treasure. Your dad delivered our free press for years! I remember being a bridesmaid for your mom and dad and not one wedding photo! I believe it was a new camera for the photographer. Your mother had an infectious sense of humour that made her that truly womderful extra special person that she was. My prayers are with you, your uncle Bill and your families. - Posted by: Beverley Downey (Calgary) (childhood friend) on: Jun 04, 2013

  • I'm so sorry to learn of Laurel's passing. I hadn't seen Laurel since junior or high school but for some reason had been thinking of her last week. I remember her laugh, her sense of humour and what a loving, generous and giving person she was. My thoughts are with her family and loved ones. - Posted by: Eleanor (Norah) Wakula (Childhood friend) on: Jun 01, 2013
