FLORENCE EMALINE LOGIE (WESTERBERG)
Date of Passing: Jun 07, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFLORENCE EMALINE LOGIE (nee WESTERBERG) Peacefully, following a courageous struggle with Alzheimer's, our mother Florence passed away on June 7, 2013 in Winnipeg at the age of 91. Florence will be sadly missed by her sons Bruce, James, Alex and Tom. She is survived by her brother John Percival Westerberg in Vancouver, her nieces: Merle Oliver in Souris, Betty Reynolds and nephew Ken Olmstead near Carberry, grandnephews Dennis, Trenton, Bryce and Blayne, and grandnieces Debra and Carly along with great-grandnieces April and Rylee. Florence was predeceased by her husband Grenfall John (Jack), her mother and father, Lillian Ellen and John Arthur Westerberg, her sister Edith Adell Olmstead, brother James Stewart Westerberg, and eldest son Donald Arthur Deck. Mom was born in Nora, Saskatchewan on April 30, 1922. She enlisted in the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War and was stationed near Belleville, Ontario until the end of the war then returned to Western Canada. She completed a course in hairdressing at the Marvel Hairdressing School in Saskatoon in 1946. She met, fell in love with and married dad in September, 1949. They moved to Winnipeg in 1952, following dad's transfer. By this time, mom was well at the task at hand of raising a young family. When we were older, mom was able to supplement the family income by working at the Dairy Queen on St. Mary's Road. She then took up a position as cashier for Norgold Pharmacy on St. Anne's Road and finally, worked as a letter sorter for the Canada Post Office downtown. Mom was outgoing and enjoyed these opportunities to meet and be with people. She also enjoyed traveling to visit with family and friends. After retiring, she decided to spend more of her time gardening, baking and enjoying times with her family, friends and Obi the family dog. Sunday meals and holidays were special times which we will always cherish. With retirement, she did more extensive traveling and particularly enjoyed a trip to Thailand while she was still in good health. In time we became aware that mom's forgetfulness was the start of Alzheimer's and that she required more living assistance, and ultimately fulltime care. This condition also robbed her of her considerable talent for letter writing, which she had developed over the years with her siblings and relations. Now it was our time to keep her in touch with the latest family news and events through letters, cards and e-mail. We were never as good at this activity as she was, but know that she appreciated our efforts. A private family service will be held at a later date. We wish to express our sincere thanks to Jeannette Brigit the Funeral Officiant and to all the staff at Green Acres for their sympathy and professionalism during this trying time. A special note of thanks is given to Chaplin David Holland, along with all the nurses and attendants at Meadowood Manor for their great care and kindness directed towards mom over the years and particularly in her final days. We also wish to express our appreciation to the Royal Canadian Legion Visiting Committee who stopped by to see mom so regularly over the years. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, mom's favourite charity, or to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. Dear Jim and brothers, Cousin Gail forwarded the memo of your Mom's passing. Although I never had the opportunity to meet your Mom, I well remember the Christmas parcels arriving! She always included a letter and spoke lovingly of her sons as we were updated on your activities! My sister Lynn has always forwarded your memos with news. So sorry for your loss.
