I am so saddened to learn about the passing of Mr. Wiebe. I wasn't able to go to the 100th anniversary at Kelvin High School and see him one last time. I will remember him as being so spirited and encouraging. Of all of my teachers, he had the most profound affect on me. He will be sadly missed. Mr. Wiebe was my photography teacher. He was very kind and gracious with his time and knowledge (I still have the camera I had when I attended his class at Kelvin). Rest in peace Mr. Wiebe. - Posted by: Tansu Erginsav (My teacher) on: Nov 17, 2013

Dear Darcy, I called the school today and just found out about Al's passing and I had to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and Sydney. I pray God's comfort for you and send my deepest sympathy. Even though I never met Al, the tributes speak volumes of what a wonderful person he was! "Good stuff!". If you were a student of Mr.Wiebe's, you probably heard him say that to you, and to your classmates. Positive feedback. We all thrive on it. Way better than criticism. Being positive was the easiest thing in the world for Mr. Wiebe. Reading these tributes and those on Face book it is easy to see just how exponentially significant being positive can be. It is also easy to see just how important teachers are. I feel very fortunate to have been taught by Mr. Wiebe, and by so many other great teachers at Kelvin. We all have opportunities to teach. To teach our children, our families, our friends, perhaps our staff, or even our neighbors. Let's all carry on being positive in the way we learned to be positive by such good teachers as Mr. Wiebe.....and Mr. Cramer, and Mr. Froese, and Mrs. Jamieson, and Mr. Dickens. You know who they are. That will be the best tribute you can pay to our good friend, and to his family. Peace. - Posted by: Stephen Mahler (Student) on: Aug 02, 2013

Mr Wiebe put my first camera in my hand when I came to shop class as a Junior High School student while at River Heights in 1996. It was with that first lesson in photography that I will remember what a great teacher and support he was to his students. Later on as one of his High School students, he gave me a set of keys for the darkroom at the back of his drafting class. When they couldn't find me in Math or Physics, Al would know where I was. I was developing my craft and love of photography and all its magic. Now, more than 20 years later and an accomplished International photojournalist having worked in more than 35 countries for over 100 publications, I am sad to say goodbye to you Al. Thank you for teaching me all that you know. Rest in Peace and take some pretty pictures with those Minoltas. best, Chris Bolin - Posted by: Chris Bolin (Former Student ) on: Aug 01, 2013

I remember having Mr. Wiebe teach me drafting when I was in Junior High back in the 70's and then seeing him in the hallways during the 4 years I spent at Kelvin! He was always a kind man and loved to teach. Even though these memories are more than 30 years old (I graduated Kelvin in '82) I will never forget that kind man! I like to think that he had a positive influence on that kid I was back in grade 9! - Posted by: Ian Lansdown (Former student) on: Aug 01, 2013

Mr Wiebe always had a smile and an outstretched arm to offer, a willing ear and a story. Thank you for a great high school experience. But I feel more blessed through being reconnected on facebook. Seeing JUST how much you loved our school, your work, your community and how much you continued to be such a source of strength to so many. Thank you for sharing your journey with us and allowing us to be there for you when we could. May you rest in peace Mr Wiebe. Thank you for being you and making us all better people. - Posted by: Catherine White (Former student) on: Aug 01, 2013

Mr. Wiebe was a great man and an awesome teacher. He always put a smile on my face, he was always willing to help others (many MANY years ago he gave me some lunch since i didn't have any before class :D) among other things. My thoughts are with his family, on their road they must travel now. Just remember you are never alone, he will always be there. - Posted by: Marianne Gainey (Fredborg) (Former Student) on: Aug 01, 2013

Mr. Wiebe was a good man. He is the one that allowed me to attend Kelvin High despite not living in the catchment area and going to Kelvin is the greatest thing to happen to me. I remember my first day at Kelvin he greeted me and approached me and assured me that I will enjoy my time at Kelvin. Once in a while he would check up on me and come by my locker to see how was I doing before. One of the nicest people I ever known. - Posted by: Savios (former student) on: Aug 01, 2013

Al had a genuine gift of connecting with people, particularly young people. He gave his time through personal counselling and countless hours of supporting school events. He was a colleague with whom I am proud to have worked. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Clay Bottrell (Colleague) on: Jul 27, 2013

Saddened to hear about Al on his Facebook page. Another good life too short. Now living out of province but will be thinking of him and our other classmates that may attend the memorial. He obviously touched many hearts during his career and now we all know why he existed. - Posted by: cheryle (school mate from Altona) on: Jul 27, 2013

In that time of turmoil that we all experience in our teen years he had a way of helping you get past all the drama and making you not only see, but understand what is really important. I will always remember that twinkle he had in his eye and his easy manner with all his students. He treated us like the adults that we were becoming, not the crazy kids that we were. Thank you Mr Wiebe. - Posted by: Jody (student) on: Jul 25, 2013

Al Wiebe, or Mr. Wiebe as I knew him was the reason I graduated from high school at all. I am a successful mother and Executive Director because Mr. Wiebe paid attention. He knew when things weren't quite right. He knew that anger is the slowest path to change and would always take understanding's shortcut to improvement. I was on a dark path in the year I met him and I will remain eternally grateful for the gifts of understanding, education and sympathy he gave to me. - Posted by: Melissa (Former Student) on: Jul 25, 2013

Dear Darcy and Sydney, I am so grateful for the Chicago trip with the divisional choir as this is when I had the opportunity to learn much about the kind of man your husband/father really was.....a true gem...passionate, and compassionate, about our youth, individual uniquenesses, and causes for the greater good. Clearly an adoring husband and father. We had many conversations about our girls and the entire room lit up when he spoke of Sydney. Love and light to you both. - Posted by: Susan Kos-Whicher () on: Jul 25, 2013
