STEFAN LUHOWY, DVM 1920 - 2013 On August 30, 2013, our beloved Stefan passed away at Holy Family Home. He was born on October 12, 1920 in Werbisz, Ukraine and immigrated to Canada in 1949. Prior to immigrating, he graduated from his studies in veterinary medicine in Giessen, Germany. Stefan worked as the Department of Agriculture veterinarian in charge of meat inspections at several Manitoba facilities. He was very involved in community life. He was a member of the Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association and the Winnipeg Philatelic Society. He was active in Ukrainian organizations and belonged to the Ukrainian Canadian Social Services and the Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre. He was an executive member of the Ukrainian National Federation, the Kalyna Co-operative and the Plast Priyat youth organization. Stefan was intensely devoted to his family and his life revolved around their well-being. He was the last remaining child of Father Valerian Luhowy, a distinguished priest of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Nina and his children, Alex (Sylvia) Luhowy, and grandchildren Alexis and Alana, George Luhowy and Irene (Dan) Hobbs and grandchildren Taylor and Zachary. He also leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Lila of Winnipeg and Ruth of Tom's River, New Jersey; his nephews and nieces in Canada include Luba, Sandra (Rob), Irene, Christine (Willie), Peter (Sharon), and Alex Andronache; in Kolomyya, Ukraine, nephew, Bohdan and niece, Daria and in the United States, nephew, George, and niece, Kathy. Many thanks go to Dr. George Balko, Dr. Terry Babick and the Sisters, staff and auxiliary of the fifth floor of the Holy Family Home for their care and concern. Panahyda will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 5 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 9:00 a.m. Friday, September 6 at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 390 Marion Street with Rev. I Mostivsky officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
