ELSA WIENS Peacefully, on October 11, 2013, Elsa Wiens died at Donwood Personal Care Home, surrounded by members of her family, 22 days short of her 105th birthday. She is survived by her children Maria (Walter) Weber, Hamburg, Germany; Helmut, Asunscion, Paraguay; Erica (Brian) Featherstone, Calgary; William (Erna), East St. Paul; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents David and Maria Wiebe, her five siblings, her husband Nicolas Wiens, her daughter Sara in infancy, her son Nicolas Wiens and his wife Anna. She was born in Memrik, Russia, on November 2, 1908. She married Nicolas Wiens on her 18th birthday in 1926, and they were both baptized on confession of their faith in June, 1931, in Harbin, China. Their life journey together took them from Russia to China, and Paraguay, before finally arriving in Canada in 1969, where they joined Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church. Mom's vocation was to build a strong family and she taught us to be welcoming to all people. Our parents committed themselves to serving the Lord and she kept that commitment throughout her life, encouraging all whom she met. We extend our gratitude for the wonderful care she received at Donwood Personal Care Home. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, 941 Garfield Street, Winnipeg, with viewing prior to the service. Interment will be at Sargent Mennonite Church Cemetery, Springstein, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee. Friends Funeral Service in care of arrangements.

  • She was born in the same year as both my parents. They are gone a long time ago. The Lord has truly been good to her. She outgrew her purpose for being here on earth. Our heartfelt sympathy.
