DOROTHY YVETTE TROOP (nee GENEST) Dorothy Yvette Troop (nee Genest) died on October 30, 2013. She was predeceased in 2004 by her husband of 55 years, Alvin. Dorothy is known by her friends and family for her high energy, love of fun, and enjoyment of life. She was born in Spearhill, MB on August 26, 1922, the second youngest of a large family and the last surviving member. Dorothy had many pleasant memories of her childhood in the Interlake District and graduated from high school at St. Joseph's Academy in St. Boniface. Following Teachers College, Dorothy began her education career in rural Manitoba. Some wonderful friendships were made during those years, especially with the Bakers of Brandon Hills. Dorothy went on to teach in several Winnipeg schools - Montrose, Cecil Rhodes, Sargent Park, and Churchill High School, ending her career as a tutor. Dorothy met Alvin when he was an electrician working at the Burnside School near Portage la Prairie, where she was teaching. She was so impressed with him stopping work and taking his hat off during the morning prayer that she agreed to date and then marry him in 1949. Dorothy and Alvin derived a great amount of pleasure and made many long-lasting friendships from square and round dancing. Their love of this activity took them around the world - Hawaii, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, England, Germany, and many cities in Canada. Socializing with friends to make crafts, knit for non-profit organizations, and play bridge were the focus of her later years. Dorothy is survived by her children Lucille (Bill) Dunn, Craig (Rozlyn) Troop, Valerie Troop (Les Frovich); grandchildren Bryan (Emily) Dunn, Cavan (Holly) Dunn, Evan Troop, Stephanie Troop, Michael (Catherine) Frovich, Patrick Frovich, Alexander Frovich, and four great-grandchildren. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 1 at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, 847 St. Mary's Road with a Mass of Christian burial held on Saturday, November 2, 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King. Memorial donations may be made to the Christ the King Memorial Fund, 847 St. Mary's Road, Winnipeg, MB R2M 3P6. • ,,,so sorry to hear about your mom's death, Val. I'm afraid I did not find out till after all the services were done, so was not there. Please know I'm thinking about all of your family during this time of sadness...such wonderful attributes written about your mom...she certainly had spunk! • Dorothy was a wonderful human being, a terrific and energetic teacher, an active retiree with the spunk to stand up for her rights and the rights of other retired teachers--but most of all, she was a delightful and witty friend. - Posted by: Jean Ogren (Churchill High School colleague and friend) on: Nov 03, 2013

  • I recall meeting Dorothy and Alvin only once. It must have been the mid-seventies. I was living and teaching in Norwood and took it into my head to drop in on Dot and Alvin on a Sunday evening. I don't know why I didn't phone first. They were preparing for guests, yet they graciously welcomed me and we had a short visit. I suppose I met you children that evening, but I'm afraid the introductions are lost in the mists of time. I often heard my now deceased father (Elbridge) and his sisters (Bernice and Lillian) speak of Dot and Alvin. My sympathy to all you children. It's always a shock and a great loss when parents pass on. My prayers are with you. - Posted by: Robert Ramsay (Second cousin (?) of Alvin Troop) on: Nov 03, 2013

All my sympathy Craig, Lucille and Valerie - Posted by: Michel Genest (Nephew) on: Nov 02, 2013
