DMYTRO JACHNYCKYJ Peacefully on October 31, 2013 Dmytro, aged 89, passed away embraced by loving family and friends at Holy Family Home. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Stefa of 67 years, left to cherish his memory are daughters Sylvia, Odarka and Theresa (Kelly), grandchildren Marc (Betty), Dahlia, Cristina (Petros), Phillip and Christopher, great-grandchildren Isabelle, Ava, Pantelis and Calista, niece and life friend Olga Skochelias, and cousin Lesia Dyck. Dmytro was born on November 8, 1923 in Ukraine in the village of Lubin Velykyi. An only child, he was raised by his mother Anna and schooled by priests in both Ukrainian and Polish. He left his homeland in 1943 in search for promised work in Germany and finding none, he survived by performing hard labour. A devote Christian, his faith and values guided him though the War where he was persecuted for failing to surrender his traditional beliefs and self respect. He met his love, Stefa, at a camp in Hanover where they married in 1945 and after the birth of two daughters, Sylvia and Odarka, immigrated to Canada in 1953 and settled in Winnipeg where their third daughter, Theresa, was later born. Dmytro worked at the University of Manitoba until his retirement. Dad had a passion for life and as a father, he worked hard to instill his values - love of Christ, family, culture and nature. He delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and couldn't wait for them to come visit always making the time to spend precious moments teaching and reveling in their presence. Dad loved reading and music. Until his health declined, Dmytro took daily walks with his dogs through which he came to meet many wonderful neighbours. An expert woodsman, he knew his way about the forest and would bring home a treasure trove of mushrooms and berries throughout his life. The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the staff of Holy Family Home, Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, Drs. Babick and Husarewicz, companion Anna and past caregivers Irene, Kerrilyn, Danuta, Julian, and Krystyna whose devotion to him and late wife Stefa ensured they lived out their final years with grace and dignity. Prayers will be sung 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 5 at Sts. Volodymyr and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor Street. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 6 also at the Cathedral with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat Michael Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, and in remembrance of Dmytro, donations may be made to Holy Family Home. KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193
