Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWASYL GUSZTAK It is with deep sorrow that the family of Wasyl Gusztak, "Tato", "Dido", passed away at Holy Family Home on December 2, 2013 at the age of 97. Wasyl, born January 10, 1916 in Duliby-Stryi, Western Ukraine, immigrated to Canada in 1950 for freedom and opportunity, and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was always grateful to be in his adopted home, Canada. He is predeceased by his wife, Helen (2008) nee Wloch. Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Dr. Lewko Gusztak (Anna) and Danylo Gusztak (Sandra); grandchildren Roman (Laura), Christina, Andrew (Catherine), Stefan (Ashley), Ivan, Katherine, Elizabeth (Don) Fotti, Simon and Paul and great-grandchildren, Nolan, Anastasia, Isabelle and Cliff. He will also be remembered by his family and friends in Ukraine and Canada. Wasyl was employed as a cook and sous-chef at the Marlborough Hotel in Winnipeg for some 30 years until his retirement in 1985. His retirement allowed him to become more active in the Ukrainian community, joining the Senior's club at the Ukrainian Canadian Institute Prosvita and becoming a member of its Board of Directors. He was also an active supporter of St. Vladimir's College in Roblin, Manitoba and the Redemptorist Fathers, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Shevchenko Foundation, Oseredok and the Ukrainian Free University, among others. Wasyl was proud of and dedicated to his Ukrainian culture and heritage. He enjoyed preparing for Christmas and Easter celebrations and sharing his culinary delights with family and friends, and particularly the welcomed carollers at his door. He loved politics at all levels and would engage any and all listeners in spirited discussions. Prayers will be sung at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy will be at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Donations in Wasyl's memory to Holy Family Home will be gratefully accepted in lieu of flowers. The family would like to thank the staff of Holy Family Home for their loving and compassionate care of their Tato-Dido for the last four years. God bless you all. Wasyl leaves behind him a legacy of love, kindness, generosity and strength of character that will be remembered always by his family and those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
