MADELEINE MARIE NORMANDEAU (DE MOISSAC)
Date of Passing: Dec 25, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMADELEINE MARIE NORMANDEAU (nee DE MOISSAC) October 15, 1917 December 25, 2013 It is with sadness and thankfulness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Madeleine Normandeau, on December 25, 2013 at the Grace Hospice, Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 96 years. She was predeceased by her husband Raoul (Ralph) and her daughter Yvonne, and all her siblings, most recently her sister Gene in August 2013. Left to celebrate her life are her children Lorraine (Dennis), Michelle, Paul (Judie), her son-in-law Gerry, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren from our blended families. Mom was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the fourth of eight children and eldest daughter of Louis d'Hilaire de Moissac and Antoinette de Bussac, She was raised in Cocherie/Biggar area and had a large and close extended family, Her parents and grandparents were "homesteaders" who emigrated from France in the early 1900's. At the young age of 20 Mom left her home by train to enter nursing training at St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing. During her first days of training Mom met a fellow student, Phyllis Lippmann, who became her lifelong friend and whom predeceased her in January of 2013. Mutual acquaintances introduced Mom to a young St. Boniface lad, Raoul Normandeau. They were married in Cocherie on April 14, 1940, had four children and lived all of their married life in St. Boniface and Windsor Park area. Mom was a traveler, our Dad was not. So when she wasn't spending time at the cottage at Nutimik Lake with Dad, Mom took opportunities to travel with her sisters, with friends and sometimes with her daughters. After Dad's passing in 1980 and her retirement, Mom continued to travel. She loved Europe, but also spent time in the southern US and cruised the Caribbean. Our Mother was a courageous fighter. She battled breast and bone cancer. Towards the last weeks of her life she fought the intense pain and finally decided enough was enough. Mom was a strong woman. She had a strong and loving heart, a strong will, a strong character and a strong spirit. Above all else Mom was a lady, always well-appointed (in the clothes she mostly made herself). She had great love for her family and we are honoured and blessed to have had her as our Mom. Words cannot describe the profound appreciation we have for the staff of the Grace Hospice. The loving care which all the staff provided with professionalism, sympathy, compassion and good humour brought this family untold comfort throughout Mom's 27 month stay. Mom's ashes have been added to Dad's urn and will be placed in their niche at Glen Lawn Mortuary on January 7 at a ceremony for the family only. A funeral mass and a celebration of Mom's life will take place in May with details to be posted in the Free Press in early May. Should you so wish, donations in Mom's memory will be gratefully appreciated to Hospice & Palliative Care Manitoba, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, R3J 0L3. Desjardins Funeral Chapel (204) 233-4949

Mrs. Normandeau was always a very caring nurse and also a friend. Whenever I was in St. Boniface for a surgery on my hip she would make a point of taking time out of her day & pop into see me, usually on her coffee or lunch break. It truly helped me fill in the day. What a wonderful lady your mom was!! - Posted by: Dell Braun (Very good friend of Mrs. Normandeau's daughter, Lorraine. ) on: Jan 11, 2014

One day I went to visit Madeleine in the hospice. She was always one for honesty about your looks whether it be good or bad. She didn't shy away from saying something. My look that day was not to her satisfaction so she took it upon herself to fix my hair and makeup. She advised me on how I should not leave the house without it. After she was done applying my blush and eyeshadow; oh she exclaimed how much better I looked. This will forever make me smile when I look back on that day. Madeleine was a true lady. I will truly miss her and the love she gave to me. Love you Grandma and may you be at peace. - Posted by: Jennifer Stewart (Grand daughter) on: Jan 07, 2014

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit with Mom Normandeau last spring. After probably 40 yrs of not seeing each other, Mom Normandeau actually recognized me. We cried, we laughed & had a terrific visit filled with great old ... old...memories. I am so grateful for that visit. Mom Normandeau had an angelic spirit & a smile that warmed one's heart. She truly will be missed even though we know that she is with loved ones and probably having a wonderful reunion visit with everyone. - Posted by: Adrienne Zosiuk (High School Friend of Lorraine) on: Jan 05, 2014

Madeleine and I have worked together at the St. Boniface Hospital in the Out-Patients Department (later called ACF Medicine) since I graduated from the School of Nursing in 1949. We had developed a close friendship that has lasted through all these years. She was a sincere and thoughtful friend and a nurse who showed expert knowledge in her care. I have lost a true friend. - Posted by: Pearl Wlock (friend and colleague) on: Jan 04, 2014

Very sad to hear of Madeline's passing. She has been my very good Friend for over fifty years. I first met her as she replaced my position in St. Boniface Hospital Outpatient Dept. when I resigned to have my Family. She was an outstanding Nurse and a Medallist of her class. I have many fond memories of her. - Posted by: Frances McDonald neeDeBrincat (a very good Friend) on: Jan 04, 2014
