FREDA URSCHATZ (nee ZIMMER) 1920 2013 With deep sadness, the family of Freda Urschatz announces her peaceful passing. Freda ended her earthly journey on December 21, 2013 at the Kildonan Personal Care Centre. She rests in the arms of her Lord. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her son Richard (Wanda), daughter Donnalyn (Con), grandchildren David (Sandra), Kevin (Novalee), Alison (Lyle), Dustin, Kristjan (Colette). She also leaves her great-grandchildren, Madison, Jade, Sarah, Rachel, Brett, Lane and extended family Leslie, Kristen, Stefan, Connor and Jack as well as many nephews and nieces. Mom was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Caroline, husband Adolf, son Gerald and his wife Sydney, grandson Jeff and his wife Heidi, granddaughter Kim, and siblings Bill, Mae, Elsie, Frank and Olga. Mom was born in Duff, Saskatchewan on February 9, 1920. Her mother and father passed away by the time she was thirteen. Mom lived with her grandmother, Maria Appel, for a short time and was then left to find her own way in life. This bleak start gave her personal strength and determination that served her well as she grew and prospered. Her life experience that followed gave her a wisdom that we all could rely on. Mom came to Winnipeg in 1940, where she met her future husband Adolf. They married in 1942 and eventually raised three children while living in East Kildonan. She was a loving housewife who loved to cook, hosting Sunday dinners as her extended family grew. Her apple strudel, poppy seed rolls and cinnamon buns are legendary. At age 43 mom returned to the work force. She was employed by Universal Printers for the next twenty two years. Her co-workers remarked that her work ethic was a model for others. Mom loved to read and was self-educated. Mom was a member of the CWL at St. Joseph and St. Alphonsus Parishes for more than 50 years. During that time she was an active member, particularly with their Perogy Pinchers. She was a pet lover who talked often of her two Dachshunds, Peggy and Tiny. The family enjoyed many years with her at our cottage at Brereton Lake. Nightly card games were one of her favourite activities. She and Adolf were Charter Members of the St. Johns Sportsman's Club at Green Lake. It was there that mom introduced many of her grandchildren to the fine art of fishing. When asked recently what her greatest accomplishment in life was, she replied without hesitation, "My Family". Our family wishes to express our gratitude to the staff and care workers at the Kildonan Personal Care Centre. Their compassion and support during mom's decline is greatly appreciated. The exceptional care provided to her and her family during her last days was a blessing that we will treasure always! A celebration of mom's life will take place at St. Alphonsus Church, Brazier St. and Munroe Ave. On January 3, 2014 at 11.00 a.m. Interment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in mom's memory may be made to D'Arcy's ARC, 708 Century Street, Winnipeg or the charity of your choice.
