EDWARD FUNK Edward Funk, 85, of Winnipeg, formerly of Steinbach, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and his son Peter in Victoria, BC. He was predeceased by his parents, one brother and one sister. Edward was born in Steinbach on September 1, 1928 to Peter K. and Justina (Toews) Funk. His father was a well-known trucker who started South East Transfer in the 1920s and later became the Pepsi-Cola distributor for Southeast Manitoba. Even during his school years Edward was already helping his father slinging Pepsi-Cola cases. Perhaps it was something in the Pepsi formula that made the Funk brothers grow tall because both Edward and his brother Albert grew to be well over 6 ft. tall. After high school he and Albert ran a restaurant on Main St. in Steinbach called the Rite Spot. Their hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries and milk shakes could not be beat. The juke boxes made it a lively place and it was a popular place for students and town folk alike. After giving up their restaurant in Steinbach, the brothers went to work for Canadian National Railways, running station restaurants in Fort Frances and Biggar Blue River, BC. When the railroads stopped running passenger service they also closed down the station restaurants so it was on to another career change for Edward. He was then employed by Medical Services, Northern Division, working at Norway House, Manitoba and Inuvik, N.W.T. He also became an Amateur Radio Operator in June 1985. His call sign was VE4OB.
