KATHERINE MATWE On Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Holy Family Home, Katherine Matwe, aged 96, passed away peacefully, following her daughter Michaela into God's care. Katherine was born on the farm in Secretan, SK on October 23, 1917. She attended Jefferson School and after marrying her dear husband Tony in 1940, they farmed together until retiring in 1974. In her earlier years, Katherine belonged to Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Thunder Creek, SK where she cantored and helped to care for the church linens. Briefly in Dauphin, MB at the Church of the Resurrection, she belonged to the UCWLC and assisted the Sisters at St. Paul's Home. Since 2001, Katherine belonged to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and its UCWLC in Winnipeg. Katherine had many skills which were displayed through the sewing of clergy vestments, sisters' habits, embroidery and knitting, which including knitting socks for Canadian Soldiers during the Second World War. She was also a self taught artist, and was musically talented both on violin and other string instruments, as well as with her beautiful voice. Left to cherish Katherine's memory are her three children, Deanna (Gerry) Stinson of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Basil Matwe of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and Sister Theresa Matwe, SSMI of Winnipeg, MB; her granddaughter, Michelle Stinson of Kirkland Lake, ON; her great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jordan, Austin and Nicholas also of Kirkland Lake; one sister, Ollie and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Tony in 1984; three infant sons, Michael, Mark and John Volodymyr; most recently, her daughter Michaela Matwe; her parents, seven brothers and four sisters. Divine Liturgy and Panahyda will take place 4:00 p.m., Friday, February 7 (TODAY) at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. with a Basilian Father officiating. Interment will take place at the Parish Cemetery in Thunder Creek, SK along with her daughter Michaela, following Divine Liturgy to be held 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 10 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Thunder Creek, SK with Fr. Yurij Lazurko officiating. In lieu of flowers, please offer Divine Liturgies or donate to "Sacred Heart Unit" of Holy Family Home.
