DAVID ROBERT BURR October 10, 1955 - February 7, 2014 Peacefully, at Riverview Health Centre, Dave ended his brave year long battle with a GBM Brain Tumor. Always easygoing, positive and with a great sense of humour he never let his illness get him down. At diagnosis he set a goal to be around for a year, and that he did, to the day. He will be forever loved and missed by his family, wife Kathy, step-child Alison, parents Beverley and Gordon, mother-in-law Margaret, sister Michelle (Morris), sister Andrea, nephew Peter, fur babies, Squeeky, Sparky, Kelly, and Dalai; many extended family, good friends and long-time colleagues. There was no greater animal lover and over his lifetime Dave took care of and looked out for almost every type of critter. He went out of his way to feed and visit with strays, pets of customers and friends and vets. Growing up in Windsor Park, Dave was always active in the sports of lacrosse, hockey, baseball, and bowling. He continued to be involved and was passionate about umpiring baseball and refereeing hockey right up to the time of his diagnosis. Dave had a very full and happy life, always doing what he loved to do to the fullest extent. He was proud of his long career at Purolator and enjoyed driving, being outside and providing great service to his customers and befriended many animals along his routes. A private family interment will be held at a later date. We would like to thank all who cared for Dave at CancerCare and Riverview as well as all friends and family for their love and support. Should anyone wish to make a gesture in memory of Dave, we would ask for donations to Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care Ward 3E, 1 Morley Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 2P4, in recognition of the excellent care Dave and his family received in his final weeks.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • As your ashes are laid to rest today, I think of you with kind thoughts. You will always be remembered and always loved. - Posted by: C.M. Hoover (Ex-Wife) on: May 21, 2014

  • Despite meeting Dave just casually on a few occasions we knew that that he was a very kind and gentle man and reading that he was a great animal lover comes as no surprise. He was a very sweet man. We send sincere condolences to his family and friends. Dianne and Bernie - Posted by: Dianne Latulippe & Bernadette Lepine (Fellow couriers and customers.) on: Feb 22, 2014

  • I met Dave at Little Mountain Ball Park as a fellow umpire. Every night we would finish our games and go into the clubhouse for a few beers. After a while we realized that we were spending more money each night than we made. We would still enjoy the after the game times but just not as often. Every winter Dave would be busy refereeing hockey but every spring we anxiously looked forward to the 'days of summer' and umpiring baseball. Dave would arrive at the ballpark, just on time for his games with dog treats in his pocket and a coffee in his hand as casual as could be. Nothing ruffled Dave. As the years went by we enjoyed each other's companionship more and more whether it be regular games or tournaments. Dave never turned down an opportunity to umpire a tournament. The ballpark will never be the same. Dave was a great friend and I'm honored to have known him. He will always be missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Ernie Vandal (Friend) on: Feb 16, 2014

  • Although Dave was only two and a half years younger than me, I was his Aunt. I remember when he came to visit his Grandma and Grandpa, my parents. Dave was very mischievous and he loved to tease and annoy me by hiding my stuff, which would infuriate me, but it was hard to stay mad at him when you heard his infectious laugh. I have many memories of time spent with Dave, most of which we both ended up in trouble. Some of these memories are walking on stones in the creek, falling in the track ditch looking for tadpoles, playing hide and seek in the rows of corn and knocking the plants down, sailing hollowed out cucumbers in the rain barrel. We had a lot of fun riding on loads of hay, tobogganing and skating. Even then, Dave loved skating and hockey, no surprise he spent so many years as a ref. Dave loved to play cribbage and we had a lot of noisy games together, point stealing was his specialty. Clue was also a favorite game we played. In the end, Dave, you are my hero, you fought your last battle with so much strength, courage and determination, you were a true inspiration. I will miss you. • My condolences to the Burr family. Dave had been my neighbor for twenty years. Over the years we built a friendship. I will miss seeing you in the lane, and getting the updates on the stray cats that were around. Aimy (my cat) will miss you this spring when she comes over to visit and you are not there. I know you were incoherent when I visited you in hospital, but I would like to think he heard me. May you rest In Peace My friend, until we meet again. And don't worry I will keep my eye out for any cats that need a helpin hand. - Posted by: Marney and Darryl (Friend and Neighbor) on: Feb 13, 2014

  • I was so saddened to hear of Dave's passing. He always brought a bit of cheer when he brought us our Purolator packages.....and we got to make a friend in the meantime. I always bugged him about wearing shorts early in the spring and late into the fall...he tried to make the season longer! I was glad to have known you. Rest in peace, Margaret - Posted by: Margaret LaRocque (Friend through Purolator deliveries (Gimli)) on: Feb 12, 2014

  • David is with God and I have prayed for his gentle soul. I have prayed also for his wife and two sisters and his parents that they will now have rest and time to find peace. - Posted by: les cox (family fried) on: Feb 09, 2014

  • We will truly miss our friend and neighbour Dave. We remember so vividly how he came to sit at our house to hand out halloween treats this year. He was so cold but determined to hand out the candy, that we decided to give him a heater to keep him warm. He helped us out here at home....just as much as we helped him out. When he couldn't do things around the yard we were there to give him a hand. Without complaint! We knew how hard it was for Dave but we were glad to help in any way we could. We'd always sit down and spend time to talk to him to see how he was doing..but he never once complained. He was always cheerful and caring. We were both honored to have him as a neighbour but not just that, "His Friendship" which was the most wonderful thing a person could have. He will truly be missed and we were honored to have known him. As he always said to us "we'll see you tomorrow".... so Dave "We'll See You Tomorrow" in our thoughts and in our prayers and we will never forget you. - Posted by: Denise & Lloyd Michaud (Neighbour and Friend) on: Feb 08, 2014
