Date of Passing: Feb 01, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY AGNES BOWES (nee COOKE) With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Mary (Mae) Bowes on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Bethania Personal Care Home, Winnipeg, MB. Mae was born in Bethany, MB on March 30, 1918. Mae is lovingly remembered by her daughter Joanne (Jim), son David, and son Michael (Kristine), grandsons Ryan (Kelly), Joshua (Liz), and John-Michael, and great-granddaughter Kensy. Mae was predeceased by the love of her life, John William Bowes in August 1972, her many brothers and sisters, and her parents. Mae came to Winnipeg in 1940 and went to work for the Department of National Defence and then took a position with the Department of Health. Mae left employment to raise and take care of her children. She lovingly pursued her role as a full time mother until the death of John, after which she courageously combined motherhood with full time employment with the Special Education Branch of the Manitoba Department of Education. At that time, Mae was the only braille typist in the department. After her retirement in late 1978, Mae enjoyed her life by caring for others, doing some travelling, and living simply. She was an active member of St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church, The Society of Marianists, The Secular Franciscan Order, and Our Lady of Peace Prayer Group. Mae was also a volunteer at Bethania Personal Care Home for five years, bringing communion and visiting the residents. The family thanks the staff of Fred Douglas Heritage House and Bethania Personal Care Home for the concern, care and compassion given to her when Mae resided at these facilities during her later years. A celebration of Mae's life was held on February 6, 2014. A private interment will take place at St. Vital Cemetery at a later date. To honour Mae's wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Catholic Foundation of Manitoba, http://www.catholicfoundation.mb.ca/ VOYAGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIAM, (204) 668-3151

I just found the obituary today. I am sorry that we lost contact with Aunt Mae. I remember the sock monkey she made me as a child. I loved that monkey. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: LeAmber Raven Kensley (nee Kimberly Cumming) (neice ) on: Nov 14, 2015

Just recently found out that Aunt Mae had passed away. I am sorry to have missed the memorial service for her. She was a wonderful lady and I will miss her and her stories about her younger year with her family and my grandfather Jim. She was the last of her family of 12 and lived a long and happy life. May she rest in peace. Lynda - Posted by: Lynda Kennedy(nee Cooke) (great neice) on: Sep 03, 2014

As members of Our Lady of Peace Church in Valley Gardens, in the '80's, I remember her gentleness and her kindness to all. - Posted by: Marge Winiarz (friend/ neighbour) on: Feb 12, 2014

Even though it's been a very long time, we knew Mary through her children. Funny how we still find ourselves looking for her waiting for the bus on Louellda in the bus shack. Our condolences to all family for their loss. - Posted by: David Heesaker Madelaine (Chambers) Murphy (Friends from The Hood) on: Feb 09, 2014
