ROBERT DOUGLAS LITCHFIELD December 21, 1922 - February 10, 2014 Peacefully, with a grateful heart, Bob passed away Monday, February 10. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Evelyn, his children Bill (Cathy), Nancy (Eric) and Jane (Bill), his grandchildren Cam (Launi), Caitlin, Jennifer, Alison (Tyler), Becky, Natalie (Tyler), Patrick and Maggie. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Diane Litchfield, brother-in-law Howard Cox and extended family. Born in Toronto, Bob grew up in Utterson, Ontario, where his family ran the general store. A major accomplishment, he surveyed the Mackenzie River for the development of the Alaska Highway in 1945. 1946 was a milestone year -- he graduated from the University of Toronto in Civil Engineering, married Evelyn and accepted work with the Abitibi Paper Company in Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario. He was elected School Board Chairman and was active in community development. A new era began in 1963 when Bob transferred to the larger paper mill in Pine Falls where he and his family made enduring friendships. He continued his interest in education, serving as School Board Chairman. During their retirement, Bob and Ev travelled extensively -- camping along the Alaska Highway and visiting Great Britain, Europe, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. The United Church remained central to their social life as they grew older. Also with him until his end was his enjoyment of family feasts, red wine and lively, humorous conversation with his kids and grandkids. His children cherish their memories of his support and interest. Summer on the dock at Bob's was central to the family. A memorial service will be celebrated Monday, February 17, at 2:00 p.m. at the Pine Falls United Church.
