ROMAN TARAS HALKEWYCZ 1917 - 2014 It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Roman Taras Halkewycz, beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Roman is survived by his wife, Maria Olha; daughter, Oksana (Lubomyr Borys) Shulakewych; son, Bohdan (Maria Larisa) Halkewycz; grandsons, Dr. Markian (Yulia) Shulakewych, Dr. Zdan (Kelly Kess) Shulakewych, Andrei Halkewycz; sister, Anna (Wasyl) Gogosha; nephew, Orest (Betsey) in Utah; family in New York and in Ukraine. Born in Lviv, Western Ukraine, Roman was the son of Volodymyr and Maria (Feschur) Halkewycz. He completed his civil engineering degree at Lviv Polytechnic Institute and married Maria (Turkewycz) during the turbulent years of the Second World War, when Ukraine was invaded by both Germany and Russia. When it became evident that the communists were annexing Ukraine, Roman and Maria fled through Europe, spending five years in Displaced Persons Camps, and finally found safe haven in upstate New York in 1950. It was here that they put down roots and raised their family. Roman worked hard, first as a laborer and then became one of the chief engineers of Norton Corp. Upon retiring in 1982, he and Maria subsequently moved to Winnipeg to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Roman was an extraordinary individual, engineer and sportsman. He delved into world affairs with a keen intellect, interested and aware to his dying day. He was an honourable, caring and religious man, who always worked to make his community a better place, participating and volunteering in many organizations throughout his life. He was president of the Ukrainian American Congress in New York, president of the Ukrainian American Veterans Club, executive member of Institute Prosvita and League of Ukrainian Canadians, and president of the seniors club "Zoloti Vorota" for 22 years retiring at age 95. Last year, on behalf of the residents of Holy Family Home, he was honoured to welcome Patriarch Sviatoslav (head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church) with traditional salt and bread. Roman never forgot his roots, but his main passion was his grandsons - he cared for and rejoiced in their many successes. Roman and Maria shared a true love. They were married for over 72 years. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 28 at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha, 115 McGregor Street, Winnipeg. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shevchenko Foundation or Plast Winnipeg. Thanks to Doctors Taras and Andrea Babick and the staff of Holy Family Home. VICHNAYA PAMYAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193

Dear Family. Just learned recently about the passing of your beloved husband, father, grandfather. He was a big man with a warm heart. When he put his arm around you, you could feel his love. My father and he were old friends from school. Now that they are both in heaven, I can just hear them reminiscing about their youth. My mother tried calling Pani Marusia, but the phone was disconnected. We send our love and condolences. May his angel protect you and give you strength and peace. We shall pray for his soul. An exceptional individual, whose intellect was sharper than many half his age; a true patriot of Ukraine who volunteered selflessly when circumstances required to develop a program or decorate the stage for concerts or other events. Pan Halkewycz will be sorely missed by the Ukrainian community as a whole and by the League of Ukrainians in particular. Roman entered my life 43 years ago, when I first met his son Bohdan. He was the unexpected bonus that I had not anticipated. An amazing intellect and font of knowledge, especially of all things Ukrainian. A loving and tireless grandfather to his three grandsons, he set an example that has done much to mould them. We cannot image life without him. With love and deep gratitude....Vichna yomy Pamyat Maria Larisa Halkewycz - Posted by: Maria Halkewycz (daughter-in-law) on: Feb 26, 2014
