DEMETRIOS (JIMMY) DOUVRIS With great sadness we announce Demetrios Douvris (Jimmy), beloved husband of Stavroula Douvris (Voula), of Winnipeg, peacefully passed away on Monday, March 3, 2014, at the age of 83 years. Dad is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Voula, his children and grandchildren, Peter (Pam) - Adam and Nathan; Maria - Christopher; Tina (Eric) - Evan and Seth. He is also survived by his brother and sister Steve and Zoe and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters Eugenia, Anthie, Georgios, Nikos and Stavros. Dad immigrated to Canada from Greece in 1956 at 25 years of age. He recognized raising a family in Canada would offer much opportunity. He worked in the hotel restaurant industry, eventually establishing his own restaurant businesses. Dad was very devoted to family, sacrificing much to ensure his children's education was a priority, that their lives would be easier than his. They learned from the example he set. Jimmy is remembered by friends for his storytelling and good humour. To the last, he maintained his humour, making those around him comfortable with his passing. His greatest joy was his months at "the lake". A special place to enjoy his friends, family and for the grandchildren to participate in "Papou's" favourite activities; gardening, fishing and always improving upon the place. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their compassion at this difficult time. Relatives and friends are invited to prayers and funeral services to be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue. Prayers will be held on Monday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 11 at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Waverley Memorial Gardens. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church or the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.

My family and I met Jimmy when he and my mom shared a room at the Victoria Hospital. I don't think the 4th floor had ever seen laughter like that come out of any of those rooms in their whole career. My favorite line of Jimmy's was when he told the nurses that he would take them to the lake, bring them down to the dock and push them in the water. We all laughed hysterically. The nurses got a big kick out of him. Vula and him were such great people who had a wonderful family. My heart aches for your great loss. You meet a lot of people in your life but only a few really stand out, Jimmy was one of those people. I will never forget how he called my sister and I blondé, I called him Papuo which made your mom laugh. I will always be grateful to him for making my mom laugh so much on a daily basis during the most difficult time in her life. He proved that laughter is truly the best medicine. May he rest in peace. I have not known Uncle Jimmy for long. But the first thing that I noticed is how similar he is to my dad, his brother Steve. In looks and humour. I'll never forget the coffee at the mall and some stories told. I miss you already Theo, and barely knew you, but you will never be forgotten. Growing up I received many calls from you and how we would meet for coffee someday. I'm glad now to have had the chance to finally meet you. - Posted by: Peter Douvres (nephew) on: Mar 11, 2014

I met my Theo Jimmy for the first time in 1979 when I came to visit him with my family from Montreal, I was only 4 years old. In 1990 we were reunited in Toronto again for my other cousin's wedding. There, my Uncle told me stories of my visit back in 1979. What I remember most though is him saying that I always wanted to be with him. He said I would say, "Eyo thelo ton theo" (I want my uncle). He told me this in a toddler's voice. What a funny guy! Those memories and that all too familiar pull of my Theo's kind spirit is what has brought me back to Winnipeg once again. During this difficult time, I pray for peace and courage to his family that love him so much and whom he loved dearly as well. May his memory be eternal. "Eyo thelo ton Theo." Always in my heart, Maria - Posted by: Maria Tolias (Niece) on: Mar 10, 2014

The short period of time I got to know Demetrios has left me with such an impression that I am inclined to let people know what a wonderful man I found him to be. Funny, caring, and a special grandpa to my favourite nephews. My condolences to all that will miss him. - Posted by: Pauline Dionne (Peter's sister-in-law) on: Mar 10, 2014

The wonderful memories we hold from our time spent with Uncle/Grandpa Jim will forever be treasured in our hearts. Although our time with him was short, the quality time spent at the lake is always remembered. Andrew and Nicholas, although were so young, still remember and continue to talk about the funny stories, and the time spent on the boat fishing with grandpa Jim. We are truly sad for not having at least one more summer to spend with him, Thia Voula, and all the cousins. We love you Uncle Jim always! - Posted by: Angelo, Cindy, Andrew, and Nicholas Cara (Uncle) on: Mar 09, 2014

He was a very good person. I know that my late Uncle Jim liked to go fishing with him at Caddy Lake and was very fond of him. We are extremely sad to read of his passing. Zoi Se Mas! - Posted by: Michael&Maria Mercury (Long time friends ) on: Mar 08, 2014
