THELMA PATERSON (nee KETCHIN) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Thelma Edith Paterson on March 18, 2014 at River East Personal Care Home. Predeceased by her husband Doug, parents Jim and Stella, and great-granddaughter Hailey Marie. Thelma is survived by her children Linda (Rey) and Jim (Janine), grandchildren Cathy (Tim), Colin (Janet), Jamie, and great-grandchildren Jolene, Carter and Noah. Thelma was born in Winnipeg on May 17, 1922 and was fondly given the nickname "Toots", which stayed with her throughout her life. She grew up in East and North Kildonan, attending Lord Kitchener and Lord Wolseley schools. Prior to marriage Mom worked at The Bay and after raising her children, returned to work, this time at Eatons. Thelma and Doug bought their home on Greene Avenue where Mom lived for 63 years. Family and friends were extremely important to Mom. Rarely a day passed that she wasn't in contact with her many close and long-time friends. Mom also enjoyed many summers at the lake; Grand Beach (where she and Doug met), Sherwood Lake and Norway Lake. Some of her favourite moments there were spent canoeing and blueberry picking. Mom loved to prepare meals for family and friends and the "lunch girls". She shared many the fun times with the "square dance group". We all enjoyed Mom's home canning and her fabulous baking; chocolate rum cakes, shortbread at Christmas and her oatmeal chocolate chip cookies that she shared with all, including the neighbours. Mom's later years were spent in Irene Baron Eden Centre and River East Personal Care Home. The special care given to Mom was truly appreciated. Following Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba, Alzheimer Society, or The Friends of Hailey Foundation c/o The Winnipeg Foundation. Cheers, Toots!
