VOLODYMYR WASYLKEWYCZ 1920 - 2014 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Volodymyr Wasylkewycz, loving father, caring husband, and proud grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Josepha; son, Roman Wasylkewycz (Marusia) and daughter, Marta Wasylkewycz (Kenneth Griese); granddaughters, Lesia and Renata Echtenkamp; brother, Zenon Wasylkevych (Nina); sister, June Repnik; brother-in-law, Richard Bernhardt (Adeline); sister-in-law, Hedy Senyskiw; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Volodymyr was born in the village of Sucha Volya, Ukraine. The outbreak of the Second World War interrupted his studies at the Greek Catholic religious seminary. Subsequently he became a bookkeeper after completing his schooling. Volodymyr fled through Europe and settled in Austria where he met Josepha. They married on June 5, 1949. Together they immigrated to Canada with one valise and seven dollars in their pockets. Volodymyr always provided for his family regardless of the type of job he held. He was a proud man, but pride never interfered with work ethics. He eventually worked at the Canada Post Office where he used his bookkeeping skills. Volodymyr was always interested in world affairs and maintained international channels on his computer. He was dedicated to the church and the Ukrainian community. He served on many boards in organizations such as the Brotherhood of Ukrainian Catholics, Ukrainian Canadian Social Services, Prosvita Literary Society, PLAST Ukrainian Youth Organization and 30 years in the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Mutual Benefit Association. Volodymyr was an energetic man, who loved his church, his home country (Ukraine), his wife and children, but it was his grandchildren that he was most proud of. He will be sadly missed. Panachyda will be sung 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March, 26, 2014 at the Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha, 115 McGregor Street, Winnipeg. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ukrainian Canadian Social Services.
