PAUL KOWAL 1922 - 2014 Paul Kowal, aged 91, beloved husband and soul mate of Olive (Ollie) Kowal, died at St. Boniface Hospital on March 21, 2014. Paul is survived by his wife, Olive; his children, Joanna Van De Velde (Robert) and Greg (Karin Pinnell, son Stephen Pinnell); and his grandchildren, Emma and Matthew. Paul grew up in Winnipeg and graduated from St. John's Tech. In high school, he was known as the star quarterback who led the Tigers to the Manitoba Football Championship in 1942. When first in university, he earned athletic letters for basketball, soccer, and track and then, when he returned after the war, for football. A naturally gifted athlete, he later excelled at tennis, badminton, golf and curling. He also enjoyed a stimulating game of bridge or chess. In his 80s, Paul was known for his prowess at the pool table and regularly challenged the "youngsters" at the Officers Mess in CFB Winnipeg. Paul joined the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War and flew as a navigator. In 1949, he completed his B.Sc. at the University of Manitoba. After a specialization course at the University of Toronto, he joined the Canadian Weather Service as a meteorologist. Following various assignments, including four years in charge of the weather office at 3 Fighter Wing in Zweibrucken, Germany, Paul completed his career as Commandant of the School of Meteorology at CFB Winnipeg. He took great pride in building the school into a highly respected educational facility. Above all, Paul was devoted to his family. He taught his daughter to skate on the frozen ponds of Gimli and coached his son's little league teams. The family especially enjoyed their stay in Germany. They have many fond memories of trekking across Europe with Dad piloting their tiny Volkswagen, camping gear in tow. Later, he spent hours unravelling math and physics for his children. As they grew older, Paul fixed their cars, repaired their leaky faucets and supplied them with home-grown produce and his famous chili. Paul was delighted with his grandchildren, offering them the same strength and encouragement he gave his children. Paul's sense of humour, optimism and support will be missed. His family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Russell Albak and Rose-Anne Borys for their kindness, care, and assistance throughout the years. Thanks also to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital 8A for their understanding and compassion. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 29, 2014 at St. Basil Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St., Winnipeg. Interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Basil Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Dad, we love you. Your spirit will live forever in our hearts. VICHNAYA PAMYAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193

Although I joined several years too late to be at the school when Paul was Commandant, I heard through many fellow Met Techs how hard Paul worked for our occupation and the school. He's always been well revered by so many Met Techs and his legacy continues to resonate across our trade. On behalf of the CF School of Meteorology and all past, present and future Met Techs, I would like to send my sincere condolences to Paul's family. - Posted by: Master Warrant Officer Brad Dennis (Standards Warrant Officer Canadian Forces School of Meteorology) on: Mar 27, 2014

Olive, Joanna, Greg and family. Please accept our sincere condolences on your loss. Paul was a respected mentor to many of us who served in the Canadian Forces Weather (and Oceanographic) Service. I first met Paul in 1973 when I was completing my training in Trenton and quickly became aware of his athletic prowess and competitive nature during our sports afternoons. As our paths crossed many times throughout my career, we had many interesting work-related discussions but more memorably, we shared many noon hours doing battle on the badminton and tennis courts. May he rest in peace. Brian and Helena - Posted by: Brian Wong (Retired meteorologist and friend) on: Mar 26, 2014

Met Mr Kowal first time as a student at the Met School, will always remember our discussions about politics. Met him again in the gym at 17 Wing after he retired and I was the Chief Warrant Officer of the School. He was a very nice and proud man. Please accept my sincere condolences.
