Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD EDWARD HENRY CARTER June 9, 1918 - March 21, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce that our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, mentor and friend, Don Carter passed away on March 21, 2014 at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg. He was surrounded by his family as he peacefully drifted away. Dad was predeceased by his first wife of 31 years Pat (McEnhill) and most recently his second wife of 39 years Verna (Stewart). Dad was the oldest and the last of his family as siblings Percy, Norman, Nora and William had all predeceased him. He will be greatly missed and remembered by children Ed (Cheryl), Don, Pat (David) and Darlene (Ernie) grandchildren Grant (Nicole), Shauna (Brett), Tyler, Cole, Louise (Darrell), Steven (Betty), Sherri (Dean), Kristin (Garth), Kyle (Amanda) and Shayne and numerous great-grandchildren. Dad was born in Moosejaw, SK and grew up in the Dauphin and Neepawa areas. He joined the Princess Pats in 1940 and shipped out to England. After months of training he was sent to the fronts throughout Europe. He returned home and went to work as a fireman on the railroad while taking courses at the University of Manitoba and starting a family. Eventually he changed vocation and hired on at Canada Cement where he spent 34 years to retire in 1983. Dad was always a farmer at heart, he loved the land, he loved animals of all kinds and he loved to roam the bush cutting trees for firewood. He could grow just about anything in the garden and always grew lots so he could give it away. Dad loved to hunt and fish with friends and family and could be ready at a moment's notice. His family will cherish many wonderful memories of fishing trips, summers at the cabin and camping holidays. No matter where his children called home in western Canada we could always expect the yearly fall visit in the camper. Dad was a member of the Brant Argyle Royal Canadian Legion Branch 222 and received his lifetime membership from the Legion last fall. He always found time to donate blood to the blood bank right up to age 72 and received an award from the Red Cross. He was a member of the Argyle Curling Club and will be missed by many in the community. Memorial service will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at MacKenzie Funeral Home, 433 Main Street, Stonewall. Family interment to follow in the Argyle Cemetery. Please join us at the Argyle Community Hall for a luncheon and to visit and remember Dad. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Argyle Curling Club, the Salvation Army or any charity of the donor's choice. MACKENZIE FUNERAL HOME STONEWALL 204-467-2525 mackhome@mts.net
