Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBEN BERGEN It is with sadness that we bid farewell to our husband, father, and grandfather, Ben Bergen after a long struggle with prostate cancer. Ben died peacefully on April 15, 2014 at Riverview Health Centre. He will be greatly missed by his wife Helen, son Brian (Elfrieda), daughter Colleen (Ryan Ford), and grandsons Scott, Marc, and Jason Bergen. Also missing him are his stepchildren, Rick (Angela) Hildebrand, Mandy (Brian) Vanderhooft, Marla (Karl) Langelotz and Melanie (Anthony) Wiens, their families and many friends. Ben is survived by brothers, George (Margaret), and Walter (Darlene); two sisters, Laura Friesen and Lena Wiebe, and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Ben was predeceased by his first wife, Adena Redekop in 1995, and by three brothers, one sister and three brothers-in-law. Ben was born on January 7, 1936 on the family farm near Winnipegosis, Manitoba. In the late 1950s Ben moved to Winnipeg and used his machine operating skills working in construction. Ben married his hometown sweetheart Adena Redekop in 1960 and together they raised their children Brian and Colleen. In 1969 he began work for Manitoba Hydro where he was employed for 26 years. After retiring from Manitoba Hydro, Ben performed small engine repairs working out of his home. He enjoyed the challenge of bringing a broken lawnmower back into service and the satisfaction of a happy customer. After being alone for several years Ben found new love and married Helen Hildebrand on May 22, 1999. They enjoyed spending time with family and their many friends as well as travelling. Throughout his life Ben enjoyed listening to and playing music on numerous instruments, especially the mandolin. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks for the care and compassion received through the Palliative homecare providers and Riverview staff. Funeral services will be held at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, 926 Garfield Street at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19. Viewing prior to the service is available through the Garfield Street side entrance to the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ben may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Mennonite Central Committee. Donation envelopes will be available at the Church.

We are saddened to hear of Ben's passing. To you, Helen, and the family we offer our deepest sympathies, filled to the brim with great memories: 1) of the summer in which Ben worked for my parents on the home farm near Fork River, 2) of the summer many years later when I boarded with Adena and him, and 3) of your visit at our home in Schorndorf, Germany, many years later again. May you find comfort in the memories you have of your years together. - Posted by: Anita and Klaus Lichti () on: Apr 28, 2014

Dear Helen, Brian, Frieda and Colleen, we have been deeply hurt by the death of Ben. Our whole family were very sad when we got your message. It was an honour that we got to know him. We liked his friendliness and openness. I, Uwe, have so many good memories during my trainee-year 1983-1984 and I enjoyed the warm hospitality at Somerville Ave. It was such a great time with Ben during my year in Canada 30 Years ago. It is hard to provide the words that will comfort you at this time. We wish you strength and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. Be blessed and with much love and condolences Uwe, Brigitte, Damaris und Jens from Germany - Posted by: Uwe and Brigitte Klaassen (Friends from Germany) on: Apr 21, 2014

Ben was my good friend. We used to help each other. He was more helpful. We, I and my wife will remember him, looking at many things in our backyard, where he put his skillful hands. - Posted by: Igor Levin (Friend) on: Apr 20, 2014

My dear uncle Ben, always welcoming me(us) into their home with a good dose of old fashioned hospitality. I remember with fondness the last time I visited him in the hospital, always with a smile and hope in his voice. What a legacy to leave behind. Today, the day of his funeral is the anniversary of the passing of his brother, Alfred, my father, 25 years ago. God bless all of the family. - Posted by: Carol and Roger Schmitke (Niece) on: Apr 19, 2014

My heart-felt condolences to you, Aunt Helen, Brian and Frieda. As equal in age to my cousin, Brian, I enjoyed much hospitality at Uncle Ben's house. These visits spanned many years from childhood to just recently when I stopped by Uncle Ben and Aunt Helen's for some freshly bakes muffins. We had some good laughs together. I love you guys and look forward to seeing you soon. - Posted by: Harvey Bergen (Nephew) on: Apr 18, 2014
