KHAI GIAN DUONG 1919 - 2014 With heavy hearts and great sadness, the family announces the passing of Khai Gian Duong on the morning of April 13, 2014 at the Grace Hospital. Khai is a loving mother to Chau (Vinh), a dedicated grandmother to Chester (Sara), Travis and Zachary, and a proud new great-grandmother to Hannah Khai. Khai is also survived by one son and two grandchildren in Hong Kong. Born on August 8, 1919 in China, Khai moved to Vietnam in 1937 and became the caregiver to the children of many families in order to better provide for her own back home. In 1978, the Vietnam War forced Khai and her daughter to flee to Malaysia as refugees. They were later accepted into Los Angeles in 1980 where her kind-heartedness naturally led her to the path of Buddhism, which quickly became her new passion in life. During this time, Khai's daughter was sponsored to Winnipeg by her now husband. What was intended to be a short visit in 1983, Winnipeg became Khai's permanent home as her heart couldn't leave her daughter and newly born grandson behind. Here, she continued her devotion to Buddhism as an active member of the Huasing Buddhist Temple while also contributing significantly to raising her three grandchildren. Throughout her entire life, Khai's strong will to persevere allowed her to overcome numerous obstacles which included spending the past 11 years in a nursing home without knowing a word of English. This was fueled by her love for her family and the determination to see them grow. Khai was a fighter and was never one to give up. Her abundance of love and care was felt fully by her family as they regarded her as an inspiration and a true symbol of love and kindness. Khai will always be loved, cherished, missed and never forgotten. The celebration of Khai's life will begin with prayers on April 18, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. then followed by a ceremonial service on April 19, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Bardal Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests a donation be made in Khai's honour to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Her grandson Travis is a very close friend of mine and he was completely dedicated to her. Routinely passing up unnecessary social events to visit his grandmother and bring light to her day. The devotion he showed her makes us all reflect on how we should prioritize our lives. The sentiment that she "will always be loved, cherished, missed and never forgotten" is no doubt the exact truth. - Posted by: Evan Edwards (Friend of the family.) on: Apr 17, 2014
